"Ready for school, Eddie bear?" Sonia Kasprak asked full of excitement. "High school will treat you great! Just wait and see."Eddie was starting high school. He was really nervous for the big day. Anxiety got the best of him. He checked the time on his small watch on his wrist and took one puff from his inhaler. "Fuck, I'm gonna be late", he said to himself.
"I gotta go, mom! See you when I get home", Eddie nervously said before heading out.
"Eddie bear! Haven't you forgotten something?" Sonia asked with a slight annoyance.
"Jesus!" Eddie exclaimed. He walked to his mom's armchair, where she spent most of her days. He leaned over to kiss her chubby cheek and quickly got up, heading towards the door. "See ya!", he said as he waved and closed the door.
The thin boy started running to school, even though it wasn't late. He just didn't want to make a bad impression on his first day, so he decided to arrive a little earlier.
When he got there, a couple of kids were outside the school, talking. He walked past them and headed inside. The halls were large and there were kids everywhere you'd look. Eddie took one more puff from his inhaler and decided to walk in, trying to find his locker. After a little while, he got to his classroom. He was really proud of himself for finding everything in time. His mom didn't care much so he had to be informed if he wanted to get ready in time.
First class was English. When he entered the class there were a few boys in the front talking to each other and laughing. Eddie silently walked to the back of the class where he found an empty seat so he took it. Minutes have passed, and people kept coming in, each of them taking a seat. That class was scary, as each student had to introduce themselves. And of course, Eddie was really anxious and sick. While the other kids were talking, he kept repeating his sentences in his head to make sure he won't mess up.
"Edward Kaspbrak!" the teacher called.
Eddie jumped in his seat, getting all sweaty. His hands were shaking and he slowly reached up to go to the front of the class. He let out a short sigh before talking.
"H-hi. Uh, my name's Eddie. I m-mean you can call me Eddie, but my f-first name is Edward. Also, I like reading. Kind of. I hope I can make friends by the end of the y-year..."
He mumbled most of his words. The teacher thanked him and sent him back to his seat. While Eddie was making his way back he could hear giggles and laughs behind his back. He decided to ignore them, as he was already too ashamed of what he just said.
"Richard Tozier!" the teacher called again.
A tall boy got up from the other corner of the class, walking to the same place where Eddie stood a few minutes ago. His hair was curly and dark brown, almost black. His skin was as pale as paper and his broken glasses were reflecting the classroom. He seemed confident so he just got straight to the point.
"Richie. I like arcade games and ice cream. That's it."
He bowed before walking to his chair. The teacher wasn't expecting that but she didn't say anything. Others came next. Eddie couldn't think about anything but his embarrassing moment. His cheeks were still red and his hands were wet. His legs were moving a lot and he just wanted to hear the bell announcing the end of the class.
His wish finally came true. He got his stuff and headed out quickly before anyone could say anything to him. While he was standing in the halls, he noticed the tall guy looking at him with a serious face. His eyes were deep and thoughtful. Eddie grabbed his inhaler and took another puff and left to another place. He noticed the tall guy turning back to his friend group. They were the ones he saw outside the school when he arrived in the morning.
