The year at Hogwarts flew by for everybody, and soon it was Christmas Break. Scorpius and Rose sat in the same compartment on the train, along with Albus, Artemis Scamander (Luna's daughter, and Lorcan and Lysander's younger sister, also a Ravenclaw), Lily Potter, Damien Finnegan (Seamus Finnegan's son, surprisingly a Slytherin, like his mother) and Hannah Longbottom (A Hufflepuff like her mom).
It was slightly crowded, but everyone was laughing and enjoying each other's company. The train ride seemed to take only a few minutes, and then they were at King's Cross station, and hugging their parents. Rose and Scorpius remembered that year they had come home for Christmas Break and told their parents they were dating. Ron checked Rose to see any signs of crying, and finding no obvious ones, he smiled at Scorpius. The families took their children and trunks, and made their ways to the Muggle world, and went home.
Rose and Scorpius were both really busy with the Christmas Holidays, but they both managed to sneak away on the Evening of the 26th to go to Godric's Hallow. Rose had been once, with her Uncle Harry, and she met Scorpius upon arrival. "Are you sure?" She breathed. She felt exhilarated by his presence. He nodded, and they silently walked to a lone house, overlooking the square. Rose looked at Scorpius, who nodded, and she knocked three times.
The door immediately swung open. "Hello. It's not often I get visitors." said a kindly-looking old woman. She reminded Rose of her Grandmother Weasley. "Come in, come in! Have some tea!" The old woman sat them both down in armchairs next to a fire, and forced cups of tea into their hands, and sat down next to them. "Now, what brings you to my humble house, young Malfoy?" she asked, looking directly at Scorpius, who promptly choked on his tea.
"How did you know I'm a Malfoy?" He coughed.
The old woman smiled evilly. "You look just like Lucius, young one. Tell me, are you two repeating history?"
There was a glint in her eye that Rose didn't like.
"I suppose, ma'am. We're engaged to be married." Scorpius asked.
The old woman smiled bitterly. "So was I. But it didn't last."She turned to Rose. "Get out while you can."
It was Rose's turn to almost choke on her tea. "Um, Ma'am, I don't think Scorpius would do that. He's not like his grandfather."
The old woman snorted. "That's what Lucius said. But every Malfoy is the same."
Scorpius and Rose exchanged looks. "Ma'am..." She started. The woman waved her off. "They are, they are. Now please, who are you?" Rose looked up from her tea and said, "I'm Rose Weasley, daughter of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, daughter of Matilda Perle and Daniel Granger." The old woman's hand covered her mouth, and then, suddenly, she was hugging Rose. Rose looked at Scorpius, unsure of what to do. He shrugged. "At first I thought you were just some poor hapless redhead who fell for the Malfoy charm," started the old woman. "But now I know that I can stop you from making the same mistakes I did."
Rose started to panic. Scorpius cleared his throat. "Um, Miss Havendish, did anyone tell you I was almost sorted into Gryffindor?"
Bettina scowled at him. "Malfoy, I am not going to let my great granddaughter fall like I did. Go back to your mansion, or if possible, tell the girl's parents I'm making her my apprentice."
She started to drag Rose away, and Rose mouthed at Scorpius, "Go get help. Hurry." Before she disappeared and Scorpius was kicked out of the house into the snow by magic.Immediately, Scorpius apparated to the Weasley's sitting room, and called out, "Mr. Weasley! Mrs. Wealsey! I need help! Rose is in trouble!" Hermione and Ron instantly appeared, Hugo close behind them. Scorpius took Hermione and Ron's hands, and they all disapparated, back to Bettina's house. When they arrived, Ron immediately looked around the room. "Where is she, Malfoy? Why are we here?" He growled.
Scorpius ran into the other room. "Rose!" They heard him cry.
"Scorpius! Don't, she's-"
"Crucio!" Ron and Hermione heard an unfamiliar voice cackle. They raced to the other room. Rose was upright, her wand out, and Scorpius was kneeling next to an old woman, who had obviously been stunned.
"What happened?" asked Ron and Hermione in unison."We came here to talk to your Grandmother about Antonin Dolohov, to try and stop him. She once dated Lucius, she might have known Dolohov, and where he'd strike next. Unfortunately, she had gone senile." Rose sighed.
Scorpius went over to her, and kissed her lightly. "Bettina tried to make Rose her apprentice by trying to hit her with the Imperius curse. Rose kept casting shields without speaking though, and it infuriated Bettina to no end. Then when I showed up, I guess her patience was wearing thin. I cast a shield silently, and Rose stunned her while she was distracted. We needed you to come in and help before Rose fainted from the effort, and to arrest Bettina." Scorpius finished.Rose nodded. "I'm okay. It was no where near my limit, and I've been practicing."
Scorpius kissed her forehead. "You shouldn't be near your limit. I don't want you to faint again from the effort, especially in a situation like this." His arms were protectively situated around her, but also in such a way that she didn't fall over.
She touched his face gently. "I'm fine, Scorpius." She smiled at him, and Hermione sighed, remembering how it was. "Come on, children. Let's get you some tea. Ronald will take my grandmother to the Ministry." Rose and Scorpius followed Hermione obediently, and they apparated to the Weasley's home. Ron sighed, and sort of hugged the old woman, and Apparated himself and the old witch to the Ministry of Magic, grumbling to himself. The rest of the holiday was fairly uneventful for Rose and Scorpius. They got together nearly afternoon, or visited friends and family. The holiday was almost perfect, but for the dark shadow of Antonin Dolohov hanging over them. Scorpius noticed his father get tight-lipped when he read the Daily Prophet, his mother seemed anxious, and his home seemed to trap him.
Likewise, Rose would wake up in the middle of the night to hear voices downstairs. It would always either be her Uncle Harry and her parents plotting movements over a map, and talking about Dolohov, or her father rushing out at all hours to collect news. Her mother seemed to have permanent bags under her eyes, even when Ron told her he would send her a sign if he was in any danger. Other than that, people were acting like it was any other Christmas. Rose and Scorpius couldn't wait to get back to Hogwarts, where people wouldn't act like it was something it wasn't, or live in perpetual (and infectious) fear.
