SHUICHI
Family
His parents didn't give a flying fuck about him because they we're way to obsessed with fame, so they ended up giving him to his uncle when he was 9. His uncle treated him like his own son but sometimes he had to leave on business trips and he couldn't take him with.
When shuichi turned 12 his uncle deemed him old enough to come with him on his trips and help him with his detective stuff because shuichi showed a lot of interest.
He loved his uncle dearly but he was pretty protective, his uncle wouldn't really let him go ouut of the house besides for school and the occasional walk around the neighborhood.
Regular life
he never really made any friends outside of his school and even in his school he was pretty lonly only had a few friends. He wasn't really picked on at school but some people did (mainly shitty homophobes) teased him bc he looked gay, later in life he found out he was Bi but told no one because he thought they would hate him for it.
He helped his uncle out a lot and pretty much became his apprentice. Him and his uncle solved a lot of cases other detectives couldn't and it was mainly because of Shuichi.
His confidence was really low so whenever his uncle praised him he got super happy.
Trauma before the game
He has really bad abandonment issues and get a really nervous if someone leaves him. Like breakups are horrible for him.
Trauma after the game
He can't deal with death at all so when someone jokes about suicide he gets really worried and immediately comforts them. Also even if anyone, even an animal that he knew the name of died he'd get really sad and somehow blame himself for it.
Post game
He's a little more confident but still blames himself for everything and anything. He wanted to wear his hat but Kaede (and Kokichi when he woke up) convinced him not to.
He still has super bad anxiety.
I don't have many headcanons for Shuichi so

Kokichi
Family
He had a half normal family from until he was 7 then his dad died from something, (he chose not to remember) and after that his mom became very depressed and started drinking. When she was sober, she tried to be a good mom but when she was drunk she'd mentaly abuse him by screaming at him that everything was his fault and sometimes she would throw a glass bottle at him, he had a few accidents where it his his shoulder and cut a lot of skin open, but he learned how to Dodge the throws, that's why he's so agile.
If he came home late and she was sober he'd lie not to get in trouble and not to make her worry about him.
Regular life
When he was around 11 child care services took him and put him in an orphanage because the school he went to found out about what his mom did to him.
The orphanage was okay. Some of the kids didn't like him much and picked on him because of his Heterocromania. (1 yellow eye 1 purple eye) I have this head canon bc of his beta designs.
But he made a few friends in the Orphanage that became the best family he ever had.
He was bullied at his school a lot too especially when kids found out he was an orphan. They also bullied him for other things like his yellow eye, they called it a "piss eye" So he saved up enough money to get purple contacts and hid his Heterocromania for a long time after that.
It's said in the Japanese version of the game that he was locked in a small cabinet as a child. So I believe that either bullies did it or a shitty foster home parent did that.
He never went straight to the orphanage after school mainly because he hated it there, 2And whenever a creepy person came up to him and started talking to him he'd say "hey creepy piece of shit, I run a secret organization, I have eyes all around me so be careful of what you do. " That would normally shut them up And if it didn't he would yell "okay everyone! Photo shoot time let's report this creep and say he was tryna kidnap me!"
Then they would run away.
That's where he learned to be such a good liar.
He then told his 9 friends about what he dose and they thought it was a hilarious idea so they made their gang called DICE.
Trauma before the game
He had somewhat severe claustrophobia from getting locked in the cabinet but slowly recoverd.
He also has major major trust issues because of his birth mom and shitty foster homes abusing him
He has a lot of scars on his neck from glass being thrown at him so he wears something that covers his neck wherever he goes because he doesn't want people to ask him about it.
Trauma after the game
His claustrophobia is so much worse now, he hates being in crowdes he also hates hugs, anything he can't freeley escape is awful for him.
He also hates needles, is very camera shy, and hates getting sick, like the kind where it's hard to breathe.
And if he makes a plan and it fails he gets super paranoid and might have a small breakdown.
After he woke up he was extremely depressed and even suicidal at times, he thought everyone hated him because of what he did.
