The Fault In Out Stars Plot Twist

It had been three months since Augustus Waters had passed away. No one had opened the door to the room that held so memories and the life of the beautiful boy that's life was cut too short. But today was the day. Mr. and Mrs. Waters were going to unlock the door and sort through the belongings of their baby boy. Because that's what he was. Their baby. The baby of the family and that was never going to change, not even death could change that. The exact same way that Hazel Grace Lancaster would always love the boy that turned up at support group one day because he was asked by his best friend. The boy that used his wish and took her to Amsterdam. The boy that bit it from cancer after being clear for fourteen months. The boy that left a mark on her heart and a hole in her life. She didn't get out of bed that day. Her demons were stirring, the same way the dust from her love's books was. Hazel Grace cried that day. The first time since the day she received the letter from Lidewij that held Augustus' last written words. His eulogy for her. Finally, sleep took mercy on her and pulled her under into a darkness as black as the grief and sorrow in her chest. By the time Hazel Grace Lancaster woke again, it was late in the afternoon and a parcel was on the bedside table. With a note. "Dear Hazel, we found this today in Gus' room. It was already wrapped with your name on it so we don't know what it is. Much love, Mrs. Lancaster." Hazel gingerly touched the wrapping paper, the same colour of the dress she wore in Amsterdam to the restaurant, not because it was delicate, but because Augustus had wrapped this himself. Although the paper was beautiful, she had to know what was inside. Hazel carefully peeled away the paper and exposed a limited edition statue of Staff Sergeant Max Mayhem from Augustus' favourite video game. Hazel smiled at the little man, blood coating his legs and chest while he was manipulated into a victory pose. Yet another tear slipped her cheek as she placed Mayhem on her shelf, admiring him from afar until the relief of slumber came again.

Two years later, and Hazel's lungs are dying at a faster pace, the medicine starting to not work, the tumours multiplying and the liquid growing. The doctors were going to trial with a new medication today, but it didn't give Hazel any hope. She rose from her bed and promptly fell back down again. She tried once more and stood for a few moments until she fell onto the shelves lining her wall, causing some things to fall down. One of them being the statue Augustus left her. It tumbled off the shelf and Hazel couldn't catch it in time. It shattered on impact, a crack separating the top of Max Mayhem from the bottom. Hazel Grace dropped to her knees, desperately trying to put the pieces together. But it was hopeless. She leaned back on the wall and clutched the broken statue to her chest, great sobs heaving in her chest. She lifted her clouded eyes to the ceiling but something on the floor caught her eye. It was a scrunched up piece of paper. Hazel plucked it from the ground and read and re-read the words from her lost lover. The real last written words. "My Hazel Grace, here are some things I know. I know you're 16 and I'm 17. I know I'm dying. I know you're dying but just at a slower pace. I know I'll never be able to give this to you in person. I know you won't find this for a while or at least until we're out of Amsterdam. I know you're crying (Please don't cry, wipe your tears and look in the backpack of Staff Sergeant Max Mayhem). I know this will never happen. I know we would have been great. I know I wouldn't have chosen anyone else. I know I'll be in your heart forever. I know I love you and you love me. I know that's all I could have ever asked for. And that's all I needed. Goodbye, my Hazel Grace."

Now, you might be wondering what was in that statuette's little backpack. What was it that was so important? Why am I even being told the story of a broken statue? Well, in the pack on the back of a fictional man that brought two teens together was something Hazel Grace would never lose until she lost her breath for the very last time. As her parents came to collect her to go to the hospital, she whispered, not an 'okay', but a 'yes'.

For slipped on her finger was a wedding ring.
