The funeral was over, I noted with a twitch of my whiskers as my tail lashed in utter excitement. Derek was visiting for dinner, post funeral. I just found this out as he entered.
I sat under the small hall table in wait. Only after Evelyn entered did I make my move.
I stood up and dashed forward, slowing down only once I was close enough to Derek, making sure I was in Evelyn's sight, I dodged an anticipated kick.
"That devil cat!" Derek backed away with exaggerated fear, on the verge of falling backward. On his face, I saw not only terror, but shock. He looked as if he had seen Frederick's ghost.
I heard Evelyn gasp. "Derek! What the hell! Leave her alone!" She rushed over to pick me up.
"Where did you get that cat! Fuck! Keep it away from me! Throw it away! Now!" Sweat dotted his forehead, and he looked as though he wanted something to hid behind.
Evelyn sneered. "Cat-a-phobic much? God! You're so dramatic!"
"Mao!" He flinched at my voice, and he had reason to. Oh Derek, Karma is here to collect on your debt.
I wasn't sure how I would see to it that today was his last, however, it couldn't be too hard.
I stared at him with shinning eyes as Evelyn held me, all the way until supper time.
The man of the house had arrived to the room with his wife, and I couldn't bare to focus on them. I was too busy plotting.
I was relaxed in her arms as she took a seat at the dinning table, the family talked until I felt her stiffen. I Immediately looked to try and find what caused it, and realized that I had unknowingly paid no attention to any word from them, but from Evelyn I heard, "Andrew is coming?"
It couldn't be that she had a thing with him too? No, of course not. The fear that permeated from her cold hands as they rested on my silky pelt told me that wasn't the case.
Thinking of it now, Andrew had always been a bit of a bully. On the surface he was very friendly and took most matters seriously, but he liked to toy with people weaker than him.
If he had ever given Evelyn even just one unnerving look, he would be facing an even harder time to come.
"Just Andrew, Derek?" The curious mother gave me sudden enlightenment. Evelyn knew of the falling out, but as it was, this was a post-funeral dinner, and it would make some sense to them if Bjorn attended with Andrew.
As an insider, of course, I knew that Bjorn, would rather be with the family of the deceased at the moment. He was the only one in the group with any ability to socialize with a person in need of sympathy.
Bjorn was last on my hit list. His crime was using Evelyn, and so at one point or another I would find the opportunity.
For now, I would take what I had laid out for me. Having Andrew and Derek in the same place at the same time was something I had to take advantage of. But how? I looked up at the chandelier, thinking I could use it, but I brushed off the idea. Too messy.
Looking at the table that had yet to be full, I thought of poison. Where would I get poison? Not to mention the fact that they would never allow me into the kitchen!
Well. If I was quick and sneaky, I could put something bad in both their shoes. Argh! I needed to find my materials, and form a plan. With that in mind, I tried to wriggle my way out of Evelyn's embrace, landing on the smooth floor as I schemed.
Oh, but I hadn't been gone for long when I heard the bell ring, serenading my sacrifice's arrival. With the pins from the study held lightly in my mouth, I dashed for the front door.
"Oh, Andrew, we've been waiting for you! Derek said you would arrive sooner than that..." I heard that woman, Mrs. Loeffler, fawning over the new arrival. I held back from retching, else I would spew my pins all over the floor.
"I'm sorry I'm late, but he had me pick something up last minute." Andrew's voice came into my ears as I entered the room. I watched him unzip his jacket and pull it off, letting Terry take it from him.
"Oh? And what's that?" I heard her ask about the item as my eyes drifted to Evelyn and then her shifty-eyed brother.
"Nothing important. Just guy things." Derek said with haste. His eyes scanned for something on Andrew's person, perhaps looking for whatever he had him bring.
"So, about dinner..." Andrew began again, taking off his shoes, and I waited.
"Wait, pause right there." Derek said to him, turning ominous eyes to his family. "I need to talk to Andrew alone for a moment."
I was curious now, and I felt willing enough to be patient for a good reveal even with my mouth full of needles. I watched Derek wait for the room to clear, and as he began in a quiet voice, I crept closer.
"I brought like a hundred grams of it, how could that not be enough?" I heard Andrew responding to something Derek said. Then, he spoke with a little more force, "It's just a cat."
"It's made for rats though, isn't it?" Derek rebuked him.
My claws came forth acknowledging that Derek and I had similar plans for eachother. Alright then, I'll play with you for a bit before I make my kill.
I stepped forward, this time making my presence known to the two sinners. My paws tingled, relishing in their expressions, like guilty children caught in the act. Andrew instinctively reached for his pants pocket to protect evidence from my prying eyes, as if he knew of my human-like thoughts. Derek only looked cautious, and yet he was so unnerved.
"Where did she find it?" Andrew began to speak of Evelyn.
"She didn't say." Derek and him both refused the answer they both came up with, perhaps because it was too vague.
Did Bjorn give Evelyn the evil cat as petty revenge? That's probably what they thought.
Unwilling to be in the same room as me and my knowing gaze, they both unspokingly agreed to find the right time.
It wasn't everyday that a cat sat waiting for her poison. I wondered first, how a human would react to it. Would they die? I hoped so.
"Karma!" I heard my girl call me. "I've got your dinner!"
I was too busy stuffing the pins from my mouth into shoes to run to her. From the other room, I again heard another voice, Derek! "Must your cat eat in the same room as us?"
I couldn't see Evelyn, and I wish I knew the expression she would make, and before she could argue, Andrew offered, "I can bring it to her if you would like."
I hurried away from the shoes as I heard him coming, so she must have agreed. Just as I saw him come in with a plate, he turned away from me and towards a corner.
I suppose he tried to hide it from me, but I noticed that he took something from his pocket, and then pour whatever it's contents were into my food. Tasty.
