GETTING into my wheelchair on my own was easier in the morning. I even managed to stand and change clothes for a couple of minutes, even if I had to sit down in between. I put my hair up, brushed my teeth, all on my own.
Hey! This is pretty sweet! I thought, thankful that today was going significantly better. I rolled over to the sleeping man on my floor. Deku was out cold, snoring with his arms splayed out. I felt bad, I didn't want him to be on the floor. There were plenty of couches in the living room!
I nudged him with a wheel. That didn't seem to work. I tried to stretch out and poke him with my foot but it didn't work either. Was he okay?
"Deku," I whispered and that also didn't work.
"Deku?" I said a little bit louder. Nope.
"Deku!" I picked up a pillow from the bed, tossing it at his face. Was that too harsh?
He woke up shortly after, but not suddenly. Like someone had softly nudged him awake with a sunrise alarm clock.
"Oh, hey! You're awake!" He said, rubbing the back of his head. "And, all ready to go."
"Yes! See, I'm not completely helpless," I said and Deku stood up, towering over my seated position.
"I never said that!" He protested, then a quizzical look crossed his face. "Did I?"
"Not exactly, but, you inferred it," I said, leaning forward on my chair, my elbows resting on my knees. Sometimes it hurt my back to rest against the wheelchair for so long.
"Inferring you are helpless and having concerns are two different things, Nishimara," Deku said. Was he actually that concerned for me? He sounds almost a little hurt!
"I am kidding," I said, reaching out my hand and patting his arm.
He laughed nervously and then turned away, going to collect his jacket. "What's on the schedule for today?"
"My first physical therapy appointment, then a psychological evaluation," I said, wheeling out of the room and toward the kitchen. Deku followed close behind. "What would you like for breakfast? Crackers or crackers?"
"I can stop on my way home to get my car and grab something for us," he said, mindlessly looking at the medications on the kitchen counter. I watched his facial expression harden as he looked at my pretty heavy steroids.
"Stop," I whispered, plucking one of the bottles from his hands. "It's just to help me feel better, that's all."
There was a silence and I could tell he didn't feel that way. I didn't know how to help him, so I clapped my hands together, breaking into a big smile. "So! Are you going to be my driver or what?"
"O-oh! Right!" He brightened. "I'll be right back!"
He was out the door in a flash. I was alone again in the apartment and I heard my phone buzzing.
>> INCOMING CALL — MY LOVE
"Hello!" I answered happily, his voice slightly muffled on the other end.
