Orange lights filling vision. Red flashing bar, insistent beeping. Clattering noise. Shields recharging. Reaching for Light Rifle. Scotty lay on the floor, his green light flickering weakly.
“Th-th-the r-r-r-r-rest is up to you Reclaimer.” Troy snapped back into reality. Scotty... Troy ran over to the empty shell. Scotty had uploaded him to his memory banks. While organic life forms would have died, Troy had been stored electronically. Scotty had saved him. But a human’s mind was just as complex as Scotty’s, and there was only space enough for one consciousness in one Monitor. Scotty was dying.
“Scotty...” Troy murmured. He didn’t realise how close he felt to the robot, and missed him already. Kyle tapped him on the shoulder. Troy looked up at the marine. Kyle’s hand was extended, and in it lay something. Something important. Troy gently held up the empty AI chip. Kyle nodded to him and started walking back to the Pelican. Troy quickly plugged the chip into Scotty’s emptying shell. He removed the device gently. A faint blue light illuminated a small area around him, but otherwise nothing. Troy’s shoulders sagged and he was about to put the chip down when he heard:
“Oh, this simply cannot do! I do not appear to have a body!” A small man with short hair and clothes that looked like something out of Tron appeared. He was completely blue, the standard colour for an AI, but the colour quickly switched to green. “There, much better. Just like home now.” Troy laughed with joy.
“Scotty!”
“Yes Reclaimer, I am back. It appears I am stuck with you now... luckily this chip is compatible with the armour I gave you. You better be keeping it! You’re not getting anything else for Christmas!” Troy chuckled and slipped the chip into the back of the Forerunner helmet. A small holo-panel appeared in front of him, and when Troy swiped his hand across it, the armour folded up into a tiny sphere the size of a tennis ball. There was a small slot in it that had the AI chip sticking out. “There, now isn’t that easier to carry?”
Oh, this was going to be fun.
