The wind flies through my hair as I hug Jade’s broad neck.

I know that there will be concencuences when I get back. I ditched my guards in the stalls, telling them that I needed their help to lift my sister's lazy pony. When they had lifted his feet off the ground, I jumped over the divider between stalls and onto Jade's back. They just stared there, dumbfounded as I rode off into the distance.

I feel her silky black hair on my face as I whisper into the mare's ear, a comfort to have a conversation with someone who keeps secrets. A content neigh escapes her lips and I hear a clear voice in my head,

It is such a relief to get out, especially without a bit or a saddle to constrict my movements. It has been such a long time since I’ve had someone to talk to because my master is such a solitary person. Every day he rode out near the concentration camps and did amazing things outside of the walls that he had never done before.

“Amazing things, like what?”

He levitated objects, flew, had super strength, anything you could imagine a Beny having. He used these to free the people inside.

He is a Beny also! I wonder how he dyes his hair? These amazing things must have something to do with his second power, which shows itself between the ages of eight and fifteen and develops until the Beny is twenty. I wonder what his first power was? I find that I am falling even deeper in love with him the more that I learn about him,

“Jade, is there anything that he has always been able to do… something irregular?”

Oh yes. He has always been able to tell what someone is feeling, their emotions I mean.

He must be a mind reader also. That is probably the reason that Tuin sent someone to kill him, those two powers together make him a threat. I wonder if they are still searching for him.

“Jade, is there anything else about the man that attacked you that you didn’t tell me before? Any reason that Nathan didn’t just fight back with the man’s own powers?”

There were actually two men.

“Two men?

Yes. One that just walked in front of me and made my master afraid, and the other who jumped out of the tree. I think that –

Her mental communication stops suddenly, but she still neighs on.

“Jade, are you al-“

I spot the black clad man from when I first met Jade and Nathan. He steps up to the mare and with one touch, both me and the horse are immobilized. Fear surges through me as I find myself helpless. The phoenix man comes up behind me and binds my hands.

“Hello Princess Annalisa.” He hisses in my ear.

“Tuin will reward us greatly when we give you to him.” He chuckles under his breath and I am shrouded in complete darkness.
