Like I said, Max can summon his mother's shield unlike his sister. Thankfully for Mal, David makes more then just puppet shows with his powers and the two of them spent some time designing and creating a sword for her with his powers. It took awhile but eventually she learned how to store her sword in her gem so she can "summon" it for battle and not have to carry it around everywhere.
