Most people imagine mornings to be delightful and sweet. With a quick awakening, and your off to school. Not to Hugh Vancer.

Truth is, mornings barely existed to the 2nd year, they were just, brighter nights. Besides, the child barely slept any nights anyway.

His alarm clock read 4:30, Hugh smacked his forehead quietly, utterly disappointed with himself. Knowing the lanky 2nd year wouldn't fall asleep again, he decided to study his house's common room.

Several- no, all of his housemates were asleep, making Hugh feel slightly lonely. Although Hugh couldn't blame them, classes start at 9, breakfast starts at 8. Instead of quietly studying their sleeping faces like he usually did, the male's poison colored eyes glanced towards the banner of the house's animal. The snake.

The Slytherin looked up to it as if held all the answers. Although Hugh's 1st-year self use to hate the house of the snake, the 2nd year had grown to tolerate it.

Hugh rested his head on his pillow once more, hoping for sleep, as a flashback suddenly hit him.

Flashback

It was the first day of Hogwarts for all the new first years, the first day of Hugh's new life. He was so much smaller and eager back then.

He had been hoping for Ravenclaw, his real dream was simply to grow up and become an Auror. But even back then he knew, you can achieve nothing unless you have good grades.

Hugh had been hoping to have his housemates to tutor him, on anything and everything about the Wizarding World. He would learn so much, and become the best Auror there ever was!

But the tiny 1st year's dreams were crushed far too soon.

"Hugh Vancer," his name was called, and the tiny boy could barely stop shaking with excitement.

The ball of energy practically skipped up to the sorting hat and sat silently onto the stool, his dreams were about to come true.

The 1st year felt the light feeling of sudden warmth on his head, as the sorting hat began to search through his memories.

"Ah yes, quite a smart child you are," the hat whispered as Hugh's smile grew. "Although there's something else in here, hmm, perhaps, ambition?"

The sorting had said nothing else, so Hugh decided that he had chosen his placement already.

'There's no way he could pick something else other then Ravenclaw,' the first year thought quite smugly, 'With a comment like that there's no way, no way he could pick anything other than-'

"SLYTHERIN" the sorting hat belowed, making Hugh's eyes widen.

Suddenly, 1st year he had the urge to let tears spill as the Slytherin table whooped and clapped.

He glanced at the Ravenclaws as Hugh slowly walked towards his new housemates, they looked at him as well.

"I really thought he was going to be one of us," one whispered, as a few others shook their heads in agreement.

Hugh's fist clenched as a single tear fell from the eye.

"So did I," he muttered as the 1st year continued to walk.
