Chapter 24 - Insomnia

The door slid open with a sigh and you stumbled out into the dimly lit corridor. Before you could even blink, you felt your slippered foot hit a small box outside of your room. Catching yourself, you bent down to pick it up with your shaking hands and peeked inside. A small note read: "Eat up~! You need to look after yourself, Seven! - Eight". Upon opening the lid, the scent of Three's cooking wafted out to engulf your senses. Your stomach grumbled in response as a smile crept onto your flushed and tear-stained face. You had missed dinner because of your exhaustion... But as you let out a weak breath, you decided to leave the tasty, albeit cold by now, food in your room. You could probably heat it up later; now, you needed company.

The few steps you walked seemed immeasurably loud now it was almost silent in the ship. The hum of the shields still reassured you, however, that you were safe for now. You sniffled and tucked your hair behind your ears before reaching up to knock on the door infront of you. You were unsure whether you would have had the courage to knock if you hadn't heard sounds of movement from within. He's up, at least. You let your hand rap a soft knock on the metal door and waited in silence. Before long, it opened up to reveal Five's tired face; it looked rounder with his disheveled hair, puffy and barely open eyes and small wireframe glasses perched upon his straight nose. All makeup was long gone.
"Hm- Seven?" His voice was deep and raspy as if he had just awoken. Even before your name left his lips, his eyes widened at your appearance. You hated to imagine what you looked like and so felt a blush deepen beneath his stare. He placed a large hand on your forehead and bent down slightly to meet your eye level better. The familiar warmth comforted you. "Are you okay...?" You avoided eye contact and shrugged, wishing for nothing more than a wholesome hug... which never came. He removed his hand with a pout and stepped aside, allowing you to enter his room. He had his clothes piled upon his bed and his toiletries gathered on the floor next to it - he was clearly in the process of unpacking. You turned around, hearing the door softly close, and again came face to face with Five. You decided to try and explain yourself.
"I, uh... couldn't sleep. I think it's just, you know... Falcon. My mind isn't leaving me alone." You reminded yourself of Four as you spoke. You could only imagine his pain as well at having to make that awful decision. Five took your hand in his and pulled you gently towards the free side of the bed.
"Sit." His hands pushed your shoulders ever so slightly to sit you down as he knelt down in front of you, a concerned look gracing his eyes behind his spectacles. He looked very 'un-Five' in this moment. Maybe this is Taehyung?  "I feel your pain, Seven... At least, a bit of it anyway." He licked his lips and looked away. Your eyes welled up at his clear difficulty in finding the right words. "Falcon was really cool. More than that - he was awesome. We all know things started off... rocky, but in the end he proved to be a reliable and dedicated hyung..." He laughed numbly. "...not that I need any more hyungs." His eyes met yours and he smiled reassuringly. "You have all of us here, whenever you need. His loss is hurting us all, but mostly you." He placed your hand on his heart. His chest was soft, yet firm. Zero's athletic body sprung into your mind again, and only the steady beat of Five's heart managed to pull you back. You stared down at your lap as he spoke. "You feel this?"
"...Yeah." He used his other hand to place a finger beneath your chin, guiding your flushed face up. His thumb traced your tearstains. He felt impossibly close, and your heart rate quickened as you looked into his deep hazel eyes. Almost like a living mirror, the beats beneath your hand sped up, too. You smiled weakly. "I feel it." Five smiled brightly at your response.
"Good! Me too. We're in this together." A sudden wave of guilt hit you. You feeling this way is bringing him down, too... "I'm not sleeping either. Dreams aren't good to us right now." He let your hand fall down as he rubbed his eyes.
"I'm sorry..." You looked down at your lap once again before hearing a low giggle from Five. You felt his arms wrap around your waist, lifting you up with near ease. You didn't expect a non-combatant to be so strong. Then again, you weren't the heaviest.
"Y/N~" He sang your name playfully as he nuzzled his way into your neck, hovering his mouth over your ear. "You FOOL!" Shocked at his sudden outburst, you squealed, and with a small grunt he threw you down onto the bed, causing the pile of clothes to fall unceremoniously to the floor. You gasped at the surprising force of the landing but let out a laugh as he held up a pillow above his head. "How DARE you say sorry!" His face was stoic as he posed like a warrior from some kind of movie, demonstrating his Shifter skills of acting. You stared up in wonder as he continued. "A fair maiden such as yourself may never utter those words for as long as I live! ARGH!!" With a roar, he crashed down on you with the pillow - most likely hoping to hit your face with it. However, you took matters into your own hands. You rolled to the left, up to the headboard, and pushed yourself back almost immediately, landing atop your attacker. You leaned in to whisper.
"Are you really limiting a fair maiden's free speech? How unchivalrous..." Five's face, now mushed into the pillow, let out a displeased grunt. You laughed and climbed off of him, resting your feet on his open back. After a moment, he rolled over and you re-laid your feet on his stomach, earning an amused look from him. He poked at your cute bunny slippers before sighing and removing his glasses, rubbing his nose. They must've hurt to land on like that...
"Taehyung?" You watched him as his eyebrows rose curiously.
"Hm?"
"Do you have family? Brothers or sisters?" It seemed like the question caught him off-guard, but it was something you had been thinking about a lot. How, even though he's one of the youngest, he seems to want to take care of everyone around him. You know he also takes great pleasure in having you around - having someone other than Zero to baby. So maybe...
"I have three brothers and one sister!" His playful grin was back again, though you could see a sorrowful shimmer in his eyes. "My little sister had ones similar to these..." He again prodded at your slippers. You couldn't help but wiggle your toes in response. "I'm sure they're all doing fine now, so there's no point in worrying, is there? Anyway, we should both sleep. Who knows what else could happen here..." Five swiftly removed your feet from his stomach and yawned loudly, earning a grin from you. He can be so silly... but I do hope his family is alright... He paused, eyeing the bed and you sat upon it.
"What is it?" You asked. He crossed his arms.
"Well... it's no good if we share the same bed, but I also don't want to leave you..."
"Oh... well maybe-"
"I know!" He held up a finger triumphantly and practically sprinted out of the room. You were confused to say the least. Looking around at his stuff, you noticed a lot of stylish clothing. Big brands, too. You supposed he didn't really have much else to spend his money on and being a Shifter, appearance is everything. However, there was one thing of interest you spotted. On the nightstand to your right laid a gorgeous silver chain, set neatly inside it's own little box. How precious. Interrupting you from your theories, all of the lights suddenly flickered and your heart skipped a beat as the continuous hum of the shields ceased for the shortest amount of time. What was that? I hope everything's okay...

- Zero's POV -

"Stupid- gah!" I lash out at the panel in anger, earning a shock from the exposed wiring. Shit, that stings. I sigh and lean back, resting my head on the wall behind me, ignoring the flicker of the lights. Why does she seem to care about him more than me? Only because they had their 'backstage' moment... It doesn't even make sense. I thought we were on the same page. I look back at the panel. It crackles slightly. This should have been an easy job; I've done alterations like this countless times, but Seven just won't leave my mind alone. Okay, maybe not ones exactly like this, but similar. Come on Zee, you got this. I activate my augs in an attempt to focus and lean in once more, making sure the drive is secure. Staring intently at the panel, I swipe and tap at the screens in front of me, finally getting somewhere. Maybe this will actually turn out well. Yeah, this is good. Maybe this is just another girl I need to forget about, but I hope not. I don't know if I could do that again...

Before long, the drive beeps to notify me of the transfer completion. I smirk. Let's see what you can do...
