Marinette was worn out. She finally finished the dress she had been working on for a client, and now was officially free to speak with Alya.
"Hey Alya, what's up?" Marinette spoke at the phone on the counter currently put on speaker while she made herself a cup of tea. Alya on the other side was filling her in on her day. Journalism was a job full of rumours and juicy events. At least her friend made it look so.
"How is Hugo doing?"
Marinette sighed while she waited for the water to boil "Hugo is... well starting to ask more and more questions about his dad, Alya I don't know what to do anymore." Marinette took her steaming fresh mug and made her way to the living room.
"Well you can't stay like that forever girl, you need help, someone right for you, someone that can fill in that gap and be a good dad." Marinette was starting to sip on her mug until Alya decided to go on and blow one of her bombing questions.
"Now that Adrien is back, don't you think you'll have a chance with him? Remember our high school days?"
"Pfffffffttttt" and there went her tea. "What? No, that won't happen, I can assure you that I have grown out of it."
Alya's voice flew with excitement. "Mari, believe it or not, you know you still have at least a small crush on him. And if not, then why won't you go out?" Great! They were back at base one.
"Maybe because I am completely fine on my own? I've got my life figured out and I don't want to take the time to get to know a new one."
"It's how you find the one, Marinette. He's not going to magically appear into your life." Alya sighed.
"You are speaking of it as an experiment, Alya. It's not that easy."
"It is if you'll be willing to actually go try. I know you do this for me, but why can't you think of it as a serious date for once. Forget all about the setup portion and try to have fun.
"You want me to believe all five guys I've set dates for you are from the same sac?"
"Yes? No? I don't know, okay. I just can't get to know someone from the first date. What if Hugo doesn't like him or if he turns out to be bad." Marinette gushed out.
"Then go on seconds. You can't push all men because you don't want to gamble your chances. Hugo needs someone just as much as you do."
"I'm not a single woman yearning to be loved. I'm just a single mother who has a boring life between chicken nuggets and sewing dresses."
"You know, someone else always said the opposite. He'd be pretty stumped up if he found out what you have been saying about yourself." Alya warned. She would actually text him and she knew. Luka.
Knowing pretty much who Alya was talking about, Marinette sighed. "He's half across the world Alya and I've already loved twice." 'Three times'
"They always say that third time is the charm right?" Alya didn't need to know she wasted her third card. Her charm was definitely not on her side. "Luka practically made it clear that you should go on and find happiness even if it wasn't with him if that's your problem." Nope, that wasn't it.
Through past years Alya have always been her match maker stuffing herself in the middle of her friends love life just to try and set up Marinette on dates.
Marinette always managed to cancel up on half of them while the other were forced by Alya, she never went on seconds or found hope in any of them.
She felt bad for Alya who just wanted to play a good friend. She would never know who her heart yearned for.
"But..Alya" before Marinette could continue Alya jumped in "No buts Marinette. You just said that you dont have feelings for Adrien. You are my friend and I care about you. That's why I set you a date with one of my colleagues. He is a very well known journalist and I think you'll like him. The date is tomorrow night at the restaurant across from our old school. That Italian one. Have fun." and before Marinette could tell her dear friend the new made-up excuse, the phone call ended.
"Great, just great! Who is going to take care of Hugo tomorrow? My parents are catering a wedding." Marinette huffed out.
"Alya is right. It's time to move on. I'm sure you'll find someone to babysit. How about Adrien?" Tikki suggested while munching on her cookie.
Marinette really didn't want to do this, but she had no other choice now, did she? She needs someone.
She pulled out her phone and dialed Adrien it didn't take long for him to pick up. "Hey Marinette, what's up?"
"I'm fine how about you?" She should have asked someone else; how can she ask Adrien Agreste to baby sit her child?
"Good, thanks for asking."
Marinette cleared her throat and went straight into topic "Can I ask you for a favour? Can you come tomorrow at around six to babysit Hugo? My parents are busy with an order and Alya is going out with Nino. I've been betrayed and set up on a date by my own best friend." Marinette explained.
"A date?" He repeated just to make sure.
"It was Alya's idea and not mine. She wants me to try and I quote 'find the right guy'."
"Yea, sure I'll be there." he replied quietly.
"Thanks Adrien, love you." Marinette realized what she said but it was to late to take it back.
"I-I mean Thankyou" she quickly ended the call, threw her phone onto the other couch, and dug her face into the pillow as she concluded.
Alya was right.
"My heart is in trouble."
