PART FOUR: RENEWALHabit Seven: Sharpen the Saw
This the preservation of an individual by the individual. To sharpen the saw means to exercise the four dimensions of our nature. The physical dimension: It is the care given to our body. The food we eat and stress management. Exercise here is listed as a quadrant two
activity, the areas of flexibility, endurance and strength should be targeted. The spiritual dimension: This is said to give leadership to our life. It
is considered a private and important area of one's life. It also takes an investment of time. Some find renewal in great music or literature, and some in nature. The author finds renewal in prayerful meditation. The mental dimension:
It is said that most people outside the school walls cease to explore new subjects. Continuing education is a vital mind
renewal. The mind is to be trained to stand apart and examines its own program."The person who doesn't read is no better off than the person who can't read".
It is highly recommended to start out with the goal of a
book a month.The Social dimension:
This is portrayed in our relationship with others. Exercising this dimension can be done in daily interactions with others. It is based on aforementioned habits 4, 5 and 6. The
principles of leadership, empathic communication and creativecooperation.Scripting others
"What do we reflect to others about themselves? How much does that reflection influence their lives? ...The more we can see people in terms of their unseen potential, the more we can use our imagination rather
than memory."Balance in renewal
The things we do to sharpen the saw in one dimension must have a positive renewal because all the four dimensions are interrelated.
Balanced renewal is said to be synergistic.
"Renewal is the process that empowers us to move on an upward spiral of growth and change, of continuous improvement."***************************
