I need to jump I told myself for the hundredth time. I was willing my foot to take the step off solid ground and into thin air but fear kept me rooted. I leaned forward slightly to look over the cliff edge and hundreds of feet below me were the vibrant green of the tree canopy. It wasn't the fall I was afraid of but what I would meet when I hit the ground. If I didn't jump I would be a disgrace to my family and would be banished from the village. I couldn't bear to see the disappointed looks in my mother's eyes if I failed, it simply wasn't an option.
"What are you waiting for Alec? Jump!" I gritted my teeth at the verbal taunt and the way the wind seemed to urge me forward. Finally, my foot lifted from the ground and I took a step into space and fell.
I hope this is worth it.
