"Let me love you," I begged her, tears streaming down my face. I held my hand outstretched toward her, hoping she would take it but she shook her head and hugged herself tighter. My shoulders sagged in defeat.

"How can I make you trust me? Haven't I proven myself to you, Erin?" I asked her, my heartbreaking. I wanted to love her and show her our love wouldn't be painful. Love didn't have to hurt, but she didn't believe me. The wetness soaked through my pants and shocked my system with the cold while I waited for her answer. The winter scene was beautiful, the sun was out, the air crisp and cold, and the snow the perfect fluffy texture.

When I confessed my love to her years ago I thought she would reject me because I was another woman. when she didn't I was ecstatic but the longer our relationship went on the further she distanced herself from me. I thought taking another step was the answer. I was wrong.

"I can't Addie. I just can't. Please forgive me." She said and when she turned to run I saw the sparkle of a tear trailing down her face. As her boots crunched through the snow, the red rose I held fell from my hand. I got up from my knee and put the ring back into my pocket.

I looked at the flower through blurred vision causing it to resemble blood spilled across the ground. "The hardest thing is fixing a heart you didn't break," I whispered to myself, stuffed my hands into my pockets, and walked home.
