Before the beginning, God was with himself in a place where he lived with the heavenly hosts. In this time before the beginning, each day God would give himself a new name that was in keeping with an aspect of his nature.
Each new name, as it was conceived, would coalesce into a strand of heavenly thread, and each thread was woven into the heavenly garment that God wore about himself. The threads were radiant and each shone forth with a pure glow of blinding, heavenly light. God the Almighty was a thread that covered God's right arm, and God the Loving lay across God's chest. God the Wise was part of the hood that God wore, and God the Provider formed part of the cuff around God's right hand. God the Creator was woven into a scarf that covered the mouth of God.
God's garment was marvelous to behold, and each day it became just a little bit brighter, and just a little bit more intricate, as a new name was added. After each day's strand was woven into the garment, God would walk amongst the heavenly host, and the host of heaven would fall down in awe as they beheld the raiment of the names of God.
One day, in this time before the beginning, a new name coalesced into a heavenly strand, but this strand was slightly different from the strands that had come before it. And as God marveled at this strand, he read the name from one end to the other: God the Victorious over Evil. God spent the rest of that morning examining the strand, for though God knew that this name too was part of his nature, he had never really thought about what it meant for him to have this name. This strand also had some unique properties.
Like the other heavenly strands, it carried its own light, but the light from God the Victorious over Evil radiated like a prism instead of shining in blinding white. When God examined Victorious over Evil from different angles, the colors would sometimes change, so that sometimes the strand seemed to emit all colors, rather than just one, but God noticed that the strongest color that it emitted was the color red. "This is quite a complex thread," God muttered.
God finally decided that the proper place for this thread was somewhere by his side, and so he carefully wove the thread into place.
Satisfied, God began his walk to display the garment to the heavenly host. As he approached the throngs of heaven, he noticed that on this day, as the members of heaven beheld his garment, they responded with a murmur of surprise. And God inquired, "Let the host of heaven speak; why are you surprised at my garment today?"
And the archangel Gabriel approached God and said, "My Lord. It is the new thread by your side. When you walked amongst us, and the light of heaven shone upon your garment, it flashed a brilliant red, and it..." Gabriel paused.
"Yes?"
"My Lord, it looked as if you were bleeding."
God was silent for a moment, thinking. Gabriel continued, "My Lord, what is the name of the thread?"
God answered, "The name of the thread is Victorious over Evil." At this, the heavenly host buzzed with surprise once more.
And Gabriel replied, "What is evil? This is something we have not heard of. We have not seen this aspect of your nature. What does this name mean?"
And God said, "Let me think." And so God thought about how to answer this question, and he explored his own nature. And the heavenly host waited. After a long while, when it seemed to the heavenly host that they had never waited quite so long as God was thinking, God finally lifted his hands and beckoned the heavenly host to draw near.
"I have decided that I will show you what this name means, so you will understand." And God brought the heavenly hosts with him to a place of wild darkness, loosened his scarf, and spoke: "Let there be light."
