“Why are you on the floor?” my father asked. He put his bags on the counter and grabbed my hand, pulling me up.
I couldn’t get the words out.
“Maddie, come help us put this stuff away,” my mother said.
My legs wouldn’t move.
The phone rang and my father got it.
In my haze I heard him say, “Yes, this is Mr. Knowles.” He went white and stumbled against the kitchen counter.
“Charlie? What is it, Charlie?”
My father put the phone back to his ear and took a deep breath. “Is…is…is she alive?”
