"Guys? What's happening down there?" I shout from my bed. I heard a lot of crashing and yelling tonight, but I really couldn't tell if it was everyone just being stupid or if something serious was happening. I want to get out of bed, but Ryan might yell at me again and that's annoying as hell. "Is Hanna about to beat up Danny again?" I yell out one more time.
I hear Adam downstairs, his voice and footsteps growing louder. He sounds angry, which is weird, because Adam's never angry. Or, when he is, he stays quiet. Why is he yelling at people?
"Jack?" I hear his soft voice right outside now, drastically different from how it just sounded. "Are you okay?"
He enters the room and he looks like a mess. A running streak of blood goes down the side of his head and his arms are also bleeding and scratched up. His sleeves are rolled up to his elbows and his forearms are streaked with blood, some of it dry and some of it fresh. Jesus, what happened?
"Ye- Yeah. I'm okay, but are you? What the fuck happened to you? You're bleeding everywhere!" I gesture up and down his whole body.
He starts walking closer to me and stands by my bedside. His hands go inside his pockets and I cringe slightly. He's got open wounds all over his arms and hands, and he just nonchalantly puts them in his pocket? Ew, I can almost feel the open cuts on my own arms.
"Oh, this?" He points to his head, taking one hand back out of his pocket. "It's nothing, Jack. I'm perfectly fine," he says, giving his signature smile.
What an odd place within that sentence to say my name. I don't like him saying my name while he's acting so strangely. And his smile. God, that's so creepy. Usually it's a nice and calming sight to see Adam smiling, but now it's just unsettling, especially with the amount of blood on him.
"Alright...Where is everyone? And what's happening downstairs? I heard a crash and some shouting a while ago." I try to change the subject a bit to distract myself from Adam's weird vibes.
"Everyone and everything is perfect. There's no need to worry," he says in the same exact tone as before, smiling even wider and showing some teeth. That's somehow worse. I don't feel... comfortable with Adam anymore. It just doesn't feel like it's him with me. I remember back to what Kib showed us a couple nights ago, with those demons and shit. I start connecting some of the dots. Oh, God.
"Hey, uh, Adam?"
"Yes?"
"What's your favorite food?"
He hesitates. "My favorite food? Why are you asking? Shouldn't you know it as well?" He starts to look a little nervous.
"Well, I did get concussed, and I guess I forgot some things. I'm only asking so I can tell Ry what dinner should be."
Adam starts to look more and more nervous, but still keeps eye contact with me. He laughs a little. "Haha, okay. I like... burgers," he answers incorrectly. "Yup. Doesn't really matter to me."
We fucking got him.
I sit up and adjust my position on the bed, wincing in pain still, and stare back at him. I give a smile and quickly grab one of the pillows behind me and start hitting him as hard as I can, my back screaming with the effort.
"I fucking knew it! You're not Adam, you fuck!" It hurts so bad to keep hitting him with my broken body and it's probably not even doing anything to him, but I've dug myself too deep of a hole to get out of now.
I come to a stop once he grabs on tightly to the pillow. I struggle and try to pull it back to regain control, but stop when I look at his face one more time. I've never seen him so angry before. It scares me and sends chills down my spine.
As I'm confused and staring at his face, he pushes me back down hard back into my lying position. My head hits the headboard and I groan as my back aches. My brother looks down at me, pillow still in his hands, and climbs onto the bed as I swat weakly at him.
"Jesus, Adam, stop!" I try to yell, knowing nothing will come of it.
"Shut up," he growls under his breath. I look into his eyes one more time before he punches me in the stomach, driving all of the air from my lungs. I close my eyes in pain, sucking in air through my teeth as tears begin to form in my eyes.
"Fuck, what—"
I don't get to finish my sentence, as suddenly my vision goes blank and there's a pillow over my face.
