"Where the hell is Adam?" Kib asks. "I thought he was following us."
I look back at Robert, who's almost done with his setup. "I don't know. Maybe he's st--" I get interrupted by some faint shouting coming from the other side of the cabin. Kib and I look at each other worriedly. Oh no.
The two of us race to the bedrooms, but first, Kib stops at the second set of stairs, excusing themselves to go to the kitchen..
"Dude, what the fuck are you doing?!" I loudly whisper. "This is not the time for snacks!!"
"Shh! Shut up, dude! I'll just be a second." They bolt down the stairs and return fifteen seconds later with a couple of things; at least, like, three knives, and something that looks like a small metal sledgehammer with rounded spikes all over the head.
"Here, here, here," They hand the knives to me. "Take these. I don't like sharp stuff."
I hesitantly grab hold of the knives, not sure of where to put them. It's not like I can put them in my pockets. Kib holds onto the hammer thing, tossing it slightly.
"Okay, go time."
We run straight to Jack's room, assuming that's where the noise is coming from since he's the only one upstairs. I slam the door open to find Adam trying to suffocate Jack with a pillow, I think. Jack's hitting Adam's arms as hard as he can, which isn't very hard, and his legs are kicking wildly in the air.
I take a quick look at one of the knives in my hands and throw it, aiming for Adam's arm. To my and Kib's surprise, the knife stabs him in his left arm, sticking out and blood spilling. I cringe. Adam lets go of the pillow and faces us, Jack quickly pushing the pillow away from him and taking a deep, shuddering breath.
"Holy shit, you got skills," Kib says.
"Leave the skinny white rat boy alone, dipshit!" I yell at Adam.
"Hey! I'm not a rat," Jack protests, annoyed and hoarse before he starts coughing.
Adam flares his nose and takes out the knife to drop it on the ground. He didn't even flinch, just like when he got hit in the head with a bat.
"I am sick and tired of you two getting in the way and messing everything up. I tried to get rid of you earlier, but you were just so stubborn and cocky. It's time I kill you two, once and for all." His voice is filled with fury and he starts heading towards us, basically forgetting about Jack.
Oh Jesus Christ.
I grab Kib's arm and we hurry to the attic, where Robert should be done setting up and waiting for us to come.
This plan had better fucking work.
I hear Adam's heavy footsteps behind us and him slamming into a wall each time we turn a corner. Idiot. We reach the attic and hide behind some boxes until he comes inside.
"Come on... come out, come out wherever you are!" He sings. As much as I love to hear Adam sing, this is literally the worst fucking time to hear it. Possessed Adam is annoying as hell.
The two of us sprint behind Adam and lock the door. He turns around to look at us, but we hide again behind the boxes. Robert comes out of the corner and faces Adam.
"H-hello, Adam." He holds the bottle of holy water in his hand, which is shaking pretty bad right now. Kib was right. We got a lame priest. Robert quickly flings some holy water onto Adam before Adam starts heading for him. Shit.
Me and Kib, emerging quickly from our hiding places, trying to hold back Adam from getting to Robert as best we can, but he is much stronger than us. He's basically still slowly walking towards Robert, dragging us along. He doesn't seem as focused on killing us anymore. He definitely could, if he wanted.
"Dude! Do it now!" Kib yells to the priest from the opposite side of me.
"Uh, I exorcise you, Most Unclean Spirit! All Spirits! Every one of you! In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ: Be uprooted and expelled from this Creature of God." Robert holds up a cross in front of him, reciting the words with urgency. Adam starts to slow down even more now, staring blankly at the priest. Holy shit, it might be working. The cross is now pressed against Adam's chest and Robert finishes.
"Go away, Seducer! The desert is your home. The serpent is your dwelling. Be humiliated and cast down. For even though you have deceived men, you cannot make a mockery of God. He has prepared Hell for you and your angels!"
Adam seems to have gotten a little more strength and starts to shout, wanting to attack Robert. But he's distracted with the priest, and barely seems to notice Kib and I, so we share a glance before pulling him backwards onto the wooden floor of the attic. He's caught off guard and weak enough to pin down to the ground and he continues screaming angrily. He's trying to pull away from us, but we still manage to hold him down.
He continues trying to pull away from us and starts to kick his legs violently. Robert, like the pussy he is, backs away to the corner, watching us struggle to keep Adam still. I want to yell at him, but all my energy goes into holding Adam back.
He gives one last shout before being pushed back to the floor, as if some invisible force hit him. I look at him and he's, hopefully, passed out, barely breathing. The anger melts from his face as his muscles relax, and I can feel the tension release from his arm as well. I let go.
Robert comes out of the corner and I softly slap Adam's face to wake him up.
"Is he...dead?" Kib asks Robert quietly.
Robert gives a soft no but then clears his throat repeats it, louder for us to hear. "No, he's not."
Suddenly, Adam jolts up, eyes wide open and groaning in pain. I jump away from him for a bit, but in just a moment I can tell that this isn't a demon anymore. Regular, demon-free Adam puts his hand over his mouth and gets up shakily to go near the doorway. He hunches over and starts to vomit. I turn around, not wanting to look at that disgusting sight, but can still hear him retching. Makes me want to vomit as well. Gross.
I turn back around and Adam's back thuds against the wall and slides down to the ground in a fetal position.
He looks like he's actually beginning to process everything. "Hanna? Kib? What's happening? Where am I? The... attic? Why are we in the attic? Who's that guy? Why am I in so much pain? Why am I bleeding?" He clutches onto his left tricep tightly and is breathing heavily, eyes darting around the room anxiously. Cool, how do we explain everything to him?
"Okay," I start. "So basically, you got possessed by the demon who's haunting this cabin and you tried to kill us. Then we went to the town nearby and this priest guy was nice enough to perform an exorcism on you, so you wouldn't kill us anymore."
Kib laughs nervously. "I hit you over the head with a bat and it like, snapped in half. Then Hanns stabbed you in the arm because you were trying to suffocate Jack, who's probably still alive. I think," they add.
Adam looks at the two of us, saying nothing, but his face screams, "What the actual fuck?" His eyes dart back and forth between us and Robert, his brain obviously trying it's best to catch up with everything that he missed.
"Hey, Robert." I break the momentary silence, turning to the priest. "I know we only brought you here for an exorcism, but this entire cabin is, like, haunted, so if you could help, that would be cool."
He hesitates and stares at me like he'd rather the building collapse on top of him. "Alright," he finally obliges. "I can try."
I'm about to thank him when, downstairs, the silence is broken and I can hear something moving. I'm not sure what, but I want to go find out.
Kib seems to have noticed the noise as well. They look at me. "Maybe everyone downstairs is waking up," they say.
Right. I forgot about everyone else for a second. "Oh, yeah. We should go check."
Adam stands up, taking his hand off of his arm, and joins the two of us. I'm still a bit wary of him, and I find myself stepping away from him as he approaches, my body getting chills. I remind myself that this is actually Adam now. Not the murderous demon Adam. If Robert did his job right.
