Months passed and I felt my life getting more and more normal.
I had finally started going out more as well, much to my mother's delight.
She took me to gatherings and parties so I would meet people. Make friends.
Even though we moved around the same circle, I never saw Jonathan again. Wonder if he got the apology letter or it got lost somewhere. Whatever. Why should I even bother.
I had started taking baking classes. I needed to learn as much as I could before I even thought of opening a bakery of my own.
I finally had a purpose. Something to look forward to everyday.
I made friends with most of my fellow bakers. They were a decent bunch.
On the last day of the baking course, we were asked to present all our baked goods to the people of our town, in a small bake sale.
It was an instant hit! People loved our stuff and came back again and again for more.
I was glad that my pastries were one of the best selling items on the menu. I felt proud when they got sold out quicker than the others' goodies.
Everyone kept saying if I opened a bakery in town, they would be regular customers.
I was helping a friend restock her table, when someone came from behind and whispered in my ear.
"Heard you're the talk of the town".
I yelped and turned around.
"Sorry sorry.. Haha.. Didn't mean to startle you".
"Jonathan! What are you doing here", I asked breathless.
"Eating. Just like everyone else".
"Right. Of course. Silly me. Umm would you like to buy something from this stall. Cindy's cinnamon buns are delicious", I tried to change the subject.
"No thanks. The stall I wanted to eat from already sold out". He looked disappointed.
"Oh well sorry about that. You are considerably late so.."
"You talk more than you did back then. Good. I'm glad". He grinned.
"Umm thanks?", what else was I supposed to say.
I started walking back to my stall to clear things up and then leave for home.
Jonathan decided to come along.
"Why are you following me?"
"I'm not. We just happen to be heading in the same direction".
Right...
I rolled my eyes at him and kept walking. Except he kept following.
"Ok now you really are following me".
Oh great the smirk is back.
"I was wondering if I could help you clean up and then walk you home".
"No thank you I'm perfectly capable of doing it by myself", I made it clear to him so he would just leave.
"Fine then I'll wait for you to clean up and then we'll walk home", he said with a shrug.
"No. That's not what I..", I started to say. But he was already gone.
Ughhh he's so annoying.
It took me about an hour to clean and put everything away.
When I left the tent, where the sale was being held, I saw him leaning against a car.
"What are you doing?", I folded my arms across my chest.
"Waiting for you. What else? Come on I'll walk you home". Wow he's a stubborn one.
"I told you no".
"Why not?"
"Because..."
"What?"
"I already told you I don't want to hang out with you".
He came up really close to me then, with a serious expression on his face and said, "What are you so afraid of? I'm not a bad person you know. I just want to be your friend. That's all".
"No you don't. You just want to know about my past and laugh it off with your friends about it. Like Nora and the others did".
"You really think I'm like them? Seriously?"
"I am in love with someone. Someone I don't think I can ever let go of. I don't want you to confuse me with whatever this is that you are doing. Just give up and go. I won't give you what you want", I told him straightforwardly.
"Oh really? and you know what I want?". Now he was the one with the folded arms.
"Yes. What every man wants. Men think about only one thing. And they'll go to any lengths to get it", I said determined to get my point across.
"I don't know what made you think that. But I am not that type of person.
I told you I just want to be your friend. That's it. Nothing more"."Why? Because you pity me?", my voice trembled involuntarily.
"No because I think you're interesting. And I like to make friends with people who aren't like my family". He smiled then. A smile you just could not, not return. So I smiled back.
"So what do you say? Friends?", he asked and extended his hand.
"Yeah I guess. Friends". I shook his hand.
He walked me home then. We exchanged numbers and said goodbye.
Just as I opened the door to my house, he said, "Oh by the way, loved the letter . And apology accepted". He winked and then he just walked off. And I stood there with my hand on the door handle and my mouth hanging open.
A few moments later I collected myself and went inside. I closed the door and just screamed. How embarrassing was that!
But then I smiled. I liked where my life was headed.
I had made friends. I might open my own bakery soon. Mum and I were going as strong as ever.
And of course Jonathan. My new Oliver.
Maybe I'll tell him about Chris some day and about the hardships of my past life. Maybe.
