James POVA sunny Wednesday afternoon I wish I could have just spent in bed, turned into Lennox making me walk around the park to "get me out of the house". While I appreciated her concern, I would have much rather watched some tv, drank a beer and not have to stick a lump of metal on the end of my leg, but here we are. Walking.
Sure the weather was nice and the fresh air would do me good, but this nagging pain just didn't want to go away. I'd already taken too many painkillers today so that wasn't an option, hence my need for a strong drink.
"So are you coming to the party on Friday night?? Prez turning 27" she said with an excitable giggle, loving the face Chaos was turning into an old man, and soon to be father."I guess I'll make an appearance, can't promise to stay the whole night"
"That is all I'm asking for!" She said while clapping excitedly, this girl is never calm.We walked some more, and I do admit to enjoying feeling the warm sunshine against my dull skin. Although ever part of my felt dull, lifeless... I wasn't enjoying life but just getting by, in some respects just patiently waiting for the end.
"What do you think about the name Harrison?" She questioned, browsing the list of potential names listed on her phone.
"Sure... though it isn't really my decision Len" I laughed.
"Well you're going to be his Godfather so I want opinions" she said casually, completely taking me off guard.
"Is that you asking me or telling me?""I know you'll say no because you're 'broken' and 'Nobody will want you' but I'm telling you that You, Maddox and Mackenzie will be his god parents. So deal with it. I'm not changing my mind" I was shocked but I couldn't help but pull her into a crushing hug. After that we spent the hour laughing and joking, I deflected any questions about my well being as always, but I had fun with Lennox.
And if I was being honest it did feel good to get out... I needed to exercise and I needed to work on getting used to my prosthetic. My first steps were being okay with the sight of it, wearing shorts again and not caring about people looking or pointing. This was part of me now, as much a part as my other leg was. And I think I felt a bit better. A small part of me relieved by the thought.Somewhere ahead I could hear dogs barking and families playing together as we walked the wooded pathways. Lennox was once again talking animatedly about babies, she was really excited for baby Callahan.
"Oh my gosh Genevieve!" She exclaimed suddenly, pulling me out of my peace and plunging me into a pool of ice water all at once.
That name. Her name, made a bolt of lightning flash through my system as I caught sight of her ahead of us.
Long brown hair which almost reached her hips danced wildly in the wind outside of the confinement of her black jacket. Beside her sat a golden haired huge dog... with an assistance dog harness on, patiently waiting with a tennis ball hanging from its mouth. I watched as she removed her headphones and smiled brightly towards us, god that smile. I don't think there would be anything in this world to make me forget her smile. Our eyes met for just a small moment, and the world around me stood still, I wasn't plagued with worry, I couldn't feel the numb pain in my missing limb... I just focused on her. I didn't miss how as we broke from our trance her eyes wandered down, and lingered slightly on my leg... but unlike others her eyes didn't fill with tears or pity, she simply looked and then reconnected our eyes with a small smile. It was refreshing.
