The spaceship was filled with laughter of the children inside. They were playing a bunch of games when one of them bumped into the control panel, accidentally setting a destination. The spaceship however did not move as the auto-pilot button was still untouched. After a few minutes another child bumped into the control panel, but this time the auto-pilot button and the force-sleep button were pushed.
The force-sleep button releases a gas that makes Volcanians sleep. It releases Methane. The gas is released throughout the flight so that the passenger will not wake up during the flight. It a feature that is useful for long-distance journeys such as the children are accidentally taking. The only side-effect of the gas is that it can cause memory loss.
The gas was released before the ship took off. The ship travelled at a slow and steady pace which made the journey two earth years long. The ride was six years long in Volcanian years and during the entire ride the gas was in effect therefore it was inevitable that all the kids(all 9-years old), who were now teens, except Chris had memory loss. The ship landed on Earth on a huge field next to a town.
As soon as the ship landed the gas was cut off which meant that the teens could wake up normally. It was sunny out when the ship landed, but the teens did not wake up until the sun went down. As they woke up, they were confused as to where they were, who they were, why only one person was sleeping and why they would suffocate when they tried to exit the ship.
