|| why trust a man? ||
——
"sweet little baby in a world full of pain."
{r.i.p. to my youth, the neighborhood}indigo is a naturally anxious person. while she isn't gullible, she is extremely superstitious. her intuition is usually right, but sometimes she can't tell which is intuition and which is simply anxiety.
so, when she realizes the same man has been following her at a steady distance for the past ten minutes as she tries to make her way back to her friend's house, she can't help the paranoid thoughts seeping into her mind.
her mother always said, "why trust a man? all they seem to do is lie. even the good ones lie. sometimes they do it because they're trying to protect you, but they're lying all the same."
for that reason, it's no stretch to say that the girl is... pretty apprehensive towards the opposite gender. she's beyond imaginative and as she wraps her cardigan tighter around her frame, she can't get rid of the stories she's heard of mean men preying on innocent girls.
she passes a beach entrance, and notices a path that leads away from the water, and up a hill. without thinking for another moment, she takes off towards the trail. her suspicions are confirmed when she hears the crunch of leaves below the man's feet as he follows her. he's not as close anymore, being caught off guard by the girls sudden movement.
panicking, indigo turns off the path, running through the little shrubbery she can see. she isn't looking back but it doesn't matter, it's far too dark at this point for her to see anything.
that's probably why she didn't see that there was a slight drop off ahead of her. before she can stop, she's already lost her balance and sliding down the hill. it's not a far fall at all, but she's shocked all the same. the ground beneath her landing is sandy while there's a wall of rock surrounding her on three sides. she looks up to see the entire ocean in front of her.
she seems to be on a cliff that looks out onto the ocean. she backs herself up against the rocky terrain behind her.
she squeezes her eyes shut when she hears footsteps, trembling from both fear and cold as she holds her legs as close to her body as she can. the bushes above the rock block the man from seeing the small spot she's hiding in and he takes off in a different direction.
indigo doesn't stop shaking for at least an hour, not even feeling the tears falling down her cheeks. she can't even began to fathom why that man was following her and how she managed to get away, but she refuses to do anything that may make him come back.
this is only her third day on vacation here in san diego, and it's certainly not what she had hoped it would be. the air is cold and harsh against her skin, and she wishes more than anything she was in a warm bed.
"why the hell did that just happen?" indigo thinks.
"... and why the hell am i here?"
