" i gotta stop overthinking and
missing what could've been.
you were never even really here."
{drowning, eden project}1 month later
late nights were a usual occurrence for indigo. riding her bike to black's beach to find the small cove she can't seem to get off her mind.she's unsure why she keeps going back. anyone else would never step foot near the place that they were almost... indigo isn't even quite sure herself what would've happened if she hadn't stumbled into the spot.
it's almost as if she feels... safe in that spot. she hasn't felt comfortable in san diego since she arrived, but something about this spot makes her forget about where she is and how she feels.
using the moonlight and soft melodies from her phone to calm her, she writes poems and draws mindlessly in her journal.
not many people come around where she is. it's tucked away so you have to climb up a bit to reach it from the water and you can't get to it from the path above unless you jump down the small drop off, but it has the most beautiful view of the ocean. not to mention, most people are bundled inside because it's winter break, and she's in the area for a few months before she goes back up to san francisco for school.
she's staying at her aunt's house, and while she had hoped for a cleared head, it seems as though her baggage feels only heavier now that she's escaped it. her aunt is in europe for business, and didn't mind indigo staying there while to take a step back from the stress of her life in san francisco.
she starts sketching, a hobby she enjoys but doesn't partake in very often. the scenery is beautiful tonight, and she finds it peaceful and a nice way of calming her mind to just capture it in her notebook. she finds herself being completely drawn into the activity, senses unable to focus on anything herself.
she's so focused that she fails to notice someone walking along the beach, not far below where she's sitting. it's not until indigo hears a jingling sound, like small metal pieces hitting against each other, that she looks up. she immediately sees the most adorable ball of fur pop up from the beach down below, keeping its distance from the crashing waves of the ocean. it turns its nose to her, seeing her sitting there and stops in its tracks, ears perked at the unrecognizable being.
"duke, whatcha see buddy?" a voice sounds, a bit quiet to indigo's ears because of the sounds of nature around them. indigo directs her attention to the dog's owner, who's appearance is hindered due to the shadows casted by dusk. indigo can't help but feel slightly apprehensive towards the person. being a girl all alone at night isn't exactly the safest position to be in, not to mention the incident that occurred only a few months ago.
the dog she assumes to be duke begins to trot up to her, deeming her no longer a threat but slowing as he gets within a foot of her.
"duke!" the unknown man says at his dog, climbing up the rocky surface that separated the five from the beach, finally revealing the subject of his dogs attention.
"oh— uh, sorry," he murmurs upon seeing her, walking close enough for her to see him despite the growing darkness around them. knowing his owner isn't far, duke decides to sniff indigo's blanket, allowing her to pet his head softly.
"hi, is he yours?" indigo questions, already predicting the answer to be yes. she sets a hand on the strap of her bag, slightly nervous. she can't really help it, she's a cautious person and if there's anything her mom made sure to teach her, it's to never trust a man.
"yeah, we don't quite have the whole 'staying by his owner' trick down yet," calum sighs, eye moving to his dog. indigo relaxes a bit, sensing the humor in his tone and feeling a bit more at ease. the guy doesn't look much older than her, and his grey sweats and band t-shirt don't exactly scream "scary murderer."
