"Don't look up" someone whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my spine. I knew it was a joke but I hated how creepy everyone made it. I looked to my right, Amy was sitting with a smirk plastered on her face and gestured for me to look up. Swallowing hard, before I did, but the only thing I found was the white ceiling of our classroom. I could hear her letting out a little giggle, of course she thought it was funny...
I returned my attention back to my teacher, I never enjoyed science, and I knew Amy didn't like it either. The bell finally rang so I quickly packed my things and walked towards the canteen, Amy was trying to keep up, but I guess I was too fast. It only took seconds to find the others at our table
"Well, you look annoyed." said Olivia, looking up from her sketchbook, she always sat with a pen in her hand.
"Oh, really? I didn't noticed at all!" I snapped, I had even raised my voice enough to make Lydia close her book, raising a brow at me.
"Care to share the reason why, you behave like, someone just murdered your dog?" I sighed as everyones eyes now were on me. Amy finally came over to the table, taking the free spot next to Emily, the others greeted her while I just glared, hoping the others would get the hint.
"Still mad at me?" she asked, revealing a slightly guilty look.
"Of course! because of you, I'm totally gonna fail that test next monday... " I sighed, I wasn't any good when it come to science.
"It's not that bad, you're gonna be just fine" said Amy as she patted my back. I looked up, raising my brow at her, and just waited for her to proceed my words. I didn't take long until, I saw her eyes widen.
"There's gonna be a test on monday?!" I wanted to laugh at her, since she never listens, but I just nodded and planted my face in the surface of the table. An idea came to mind, and I looked at the end of our table, Lydia was reading in her book like always, she was the best in every subject. We all had one thing we were good at, Olivia could draw anything, I really envied her for her talent. Emily were an expert when it came to computers, Amy was known as the class clown, and could make everyone smile.
I sent Lydia a message, knowing that the bookworm wouldn't look up from her book. Lydia was my best friend, and like always, I hoped, she could help me with my problem.
After school, I walked to Lydia's house, she said she would help. The whole joke about 'don't look up' was really annoying, and I couldn't get it out of my head. I knew it was somehow creepy, but I couldn't remember the story behind it.
"Oh, hello Piper!" Lydia greeted, she had like usual a book in her hand and her reading glasses on.
"Hey Lyddie, erh.. could you maybe tell me about the legend, that everyone talks about, just before we start on the science things?" I asked her, as I entered the house. Lydia's house was always so quiet, her parents weren't home the most of the time. I have spoken to Mrs. Anderson before, and I know for a fact, that she's a doctor. But when it comes to mr anderson, I have no clue, Lydia never talks about her father. I guess that's the reason she reads so much, she have the silent to do it.
"I hate how they make fun of it..." Lydia was frowning now, I knew she was superstitious, so of course she was the only one, besides me, who didn't joke about it.
"But I'm not surprised that you've already forgotten what it's all about." her frown was replaced with a grin as she looked at me.
"Oh, shut up and tell me!"
she then took a book from the bookshelf beside her and sat down on her bed, while I took her desk chair.
"A couple hundred years ago, there were a mother with a young daughter, they lived peacefully in a small town. But one day the mother was accused for being a witch, someone apparently had seen, something like a pot, flying around by itself. The town members tortured her and even let some men rape her, but the only way to get rid of a witch is by burning them, so that's what they did. One day, they dragged her all the way to the center of the town, tied her to a pole and the set fire to her. And her little daughter? She was forced to stand and watch her mother be burned alive.
But what the town didn't know, were that it wasn't the mother who were a witch, it was the little daughter, and if you ever say something bad about the witch' dear mother, she'll give you one warning in the words; don't look up. If you choose to ignore the warning, you will never get the chance to look anywhere, for she'll give you a painful death."
"Wow... " I didn't really know what to say, that explains, at least, why it's only girls who can make that joke, it have to be a little girl's voice.
That night, me and Lydia used hours just on talking about it. I remember I said, in all frustration, that the mother maybe had deserved it for hiding a witch. but when I think about, I didn't really mean it... I just said it.
Next day, I kept hearing someone say 'don't look up', the joke was really starting to annoy me. I spent the whole school day, looking for Amy, knowing it probably was her idea, to make every girl say that to me. But I didn't find her.. I even stayed a bit after school to see if she showed up, but again, she didn't..
I had to give up, so I choose to walk home, thinking she probably was sick, I mean, it's winter so that could easily happen. It was really cold, the wind made feel awful colder than it should, and the sky were now dark and walking the long way home, in the poor lighting from the streetlights, didn't help at all.
Suddenly, the wind stopped. I heard a little innocent voice behind me say: "Don't look up". I thought I had imagined it, so I turned around to see a little cute girl, standing a few feets away. She had beautiful long red hair, green eyes and was wearing a floral dress. A thin coat was draped around her shoulders, I felt a bit bad for the girl, being out here, she must be freezing.
I came back to reality, when I realized I was staring.
"What did you just say?" I asked in a calm voice.
"Don't look up" she repeated. Then it clicked, Amy. She had taken it to far this time. I took a deep breath.
"Are you for real, Amy? Why would you bring a little girl into this, huh? Letting her stand outside, probably freezing, just so you could have some fun!" I shouted, making sure she could hear me. I looked around, expecting for Amy to come out from her little hiding spot. But what was I thinking? She probably had a camera, so guessing she wanted to get a frighten piper on video, I looked up.
I looked up, thinking she had set up a jump scare for me or something, but like always, I found nothing...
But what I regret the most, was looking down again. The cute little innocent girl, wasn't so cute and innocent anymore. She was now floating in mid air, her face only inches from mine. I stared with wide eyes, her before green eyes was now more like black orbs, her hair was messy and so dirty you'll no longer think it was red, her skin so pale you could see the veins. Her slender hand was covering my mouth, making sure I didn't make a sound.
"Silly human" she said, almost sounding disappointed, and I was overwhelmed by the strong scent of both rotten flesh and something metallic. She let out a little laugh, revealing her sharp shark-like teeth.
"I warned you."
