reaping day.

it's the worst day of the year. i absolutely hate it, even though i'm not twelve yet. i'm only six. it makes me scared because one of my sisters could get reaped, and i really, really don't want that.

i got out of bed and looked at the dress that was laid on my dresser. it was a light pink dress. it used to belong to my older sister prim. i walked into my sister katniss's room and saw her and prim laying in the bed, snuggled together. i climbed onto the bed and shook her.

"katniss," i said in a soft whisper, so i wouldn't wake prim up. she opened one eye and looked at me. i put my hand over my mouth to muffle the giggles that were coming out of it.

"hey, athena," she answered. she opened both eyes and stretched her arms. she looked around and yawned.

"it's reaping day," i stated softly. i climbed off of the bed and she stood up. she picked me up and held me close to her chest as she carried me to my room. she dropped me onto the bed and i let out a shriek of surprise. she started to laugh with me. she lifted up the dress and inspected it carefully.

"ooh, pretty. i remember when prim wore this dress," she murmured to herself. i stood up on the bed and she helped me put on the dress. she zipped it up in the back and took my long, honey brown hair in between her fingers.

"do you want me to french braid it?" my sister asked. i heard prim shuffling around her room down the hallway. i nodded cautiously.

"yeah, but don't pull on it hard," i answered. she had already started braiding before i even said anything. my mom walked in and looked at katniss.

"i set out an outfit for you," my mother said stiffly. i could feel my sister's hand tense around the piece of hair that it was wrapped around. my sister said something i couldn't quite hear and my mother walked out of the room. my sister contiued braiding my hair and didn't say a word.

when she finished, she set out my dress shoes and went to get ready herself. i slipped on my white mary jane's and met my mother in the kitchen.

"eat something, athena," she whispered. i shook my head. my stomach was tied in knots; i couldn't eat, even if i wanted to. we heard the sirens, calling the whole district to the square. katniss and prim walked out of their room and we headed down to the square. i had my hand in prim's and katniss's hands. this was prim's first reaping, and i could tell she was nervous.

when we arrived at the square, my mother and i had to go to the roped off area that was desgnated for the families. katniss and prim both gave me and mother a very long hug, just in case.. you know, the worst possible thing happens. my mother picks me up and we make our way to the grassy area. we reach where hazelle is standing, and my mom sets me down. i take my spot next to posy.

"hi," i whisper.

"hi," she whispers back. that's basically the whole conversation.

soon enough, the reaping begins. we sit through the anthem, and the lame video that we're forced to watch every single year. i gripped my mother's hand when i heard effie trinket's shrill voice echo through the square.

"ladies first!" she said, and i watched her reach into the large glass fishbowl that sat on a podium on the stage. she pulled out the lean piece of paper and unfolded it.

"primrose everdeen!" she called. reality didn't hit me until my mother started to cry softly. it felt like my airways were closing in on me. i made my way through the crowd of adults and i leaned against the rope as i watched my sister walk towards the stage.

"prim! prim!" i shrieked. she turned her head and just as i broke the silence with my shrill yelling, something else could be heard, too.

"i volunteer! i volunteer as tribute!" that was katniss. i watched as she hugged prim, and peacekeepers escorted her to the stage. gale carried prim over to where my mother was sitting and i no longer cared about anything other than my sister.

on that stage.

waiting for her death.

i felt a pair of strong arms lift me from my curled up position on the ground. this person carried me to the marble stairs of the justice building and only then did i look up. it was gale.

"you'll be okay," he murmured as i wrapped my arms around his neck, as we waited to go see katniss for what could be the last time.
