Chapter One
I sat in the motionless car with my head pressed against the window. I could feel the suns warmth radiating off the tinted glass. It was summertime, and summertime meant heat. Nothing more to it.
My phone let out an eery shrill, startling me. I glanced down to where it was nestled in my lap. There, flashing on the screen, was a text from Olivia. I picked the phone up just as the light turned green and my mother stepped on the gas, yanking us forward. The phone slipped out of my small hand and tumbled toward the carpeted flooring.
I groaned, leaning down, and I stretched out to reach the phone which was still glowing from Olivia's text. When I finally snagged it, I curled back up against the window and began to read.
Olivia: Good luck at your cancer evaluation, lol, you don't need it. 10 years of these tests and your still cancer free!! :)
I smiled, she was right. I have been free of cancer for 10 years now but my mom still insists I go get tests done twice a year just to make sure. They're nerve racking but I've been passing them for ages so I guess I have nothing to worry about.
Me: thanks. Your such a great friend :) love ya
I eyed my mother sitting beside me in the drivers seat. She was more nervous than I was, she always is. I could see her ghastly white knuckles clenched onto the steering wheel, her bloodshot eyes, and hard concentration of thought. I felt bad, she almost lost me once and she has to worry every day of the year whether or not she's going to loose me for real.
My phone vibrated.
Olivia: I have a surprise for you later. Your mom is in on it :) she will drop you off at my house when your done with tests. See ya later
I smiled, turned my phone off, and slid it into the back pocket of my worn jeans. I could see the wide sets of doors to the hospital as we pulled into the entrance. The very same doors I was released from ten years ago being announced officially cancer free.
When my mom pulled into a large parking space we just kind of sat there. She was too lost in thought to even move.
"Mom..."
She glanced over at me.
"Everything's gonna be fine. I promise."
She nodded her head and gulped, "Your right. Sorry Kris, you don't deserve me acting like this. It's rude. I know your going to be fine, just like always."
I sighed exasperatedly. As soon as we stepped out of the cars threshold, I embraced her in a tight hug.
"It's not rude mom, it's life."
She nodded again, wiping an escaping tear from her cheek.
We slowly walked away and up towards the entrance. I was hit with an all too familiar smell of antiseptics as soon as we entered the large lobby. A blast of frigid air smacked me in the face and I could just about feel the tendrils of desperation reaching out to touch me. To wrap their lanky fingers and tangle me up in some sort of trap.
"Kristen!"
I looked up, releasing myself from its hold to see Amelia smiling widely at me.
"Oh my goodness it's been a while! Look at you, all grown up. How are you dear?" She ran up to me and enveloped my body in a tight squeeze. I was a few inches taller than her now.
"Yes, it's been ten years and I'm doing great. I'm still cancer free." I exclaimed, thrilled to be standing in her presence.
"Oh that's wonderful! What are you doing here then?" She asked, curious.
