For some reason, most children with FOP have deformed big toes. They might have a lump instead of a joint or muscle. The first real 'flare up' usually occurs before a child reaches 10. Children with FOP might start growing extra bones in the neck first, then the bone growth will proceed down to the feet. By the time someone with FOP reaches 40, they will be completely paralysed due to so much bone growth.
