Abby's family consists of four people. Her mom, dad and a younger sister. Abby's mom, Jeyamalar, is a kind and caring woman, who is always looking out for her children and husband. She is a stay at home wife and is always making sure that her girls get what they need. Abby's dad, Yogeswaran, is also a very kind and caring man. Like Agricultural Families, Abby's family is more patriarchal, as her father is the one who makes most of the decisions in the house, but he always asks his family for input on everything. He works very hard to provide for his family and always makes sure that they have everything the need. Her younger sister, Arthy, is also very caring however she loves to joke around and play pranks on Abby, but when the time comes Arthy would do anything for Abby. Abby and Arthy are very close and share everything with each other. They grew up sharing everything they had and never complained about it. Even though they were so close, they developed different interests but still share them with each other and help nurture each others interests.
Abby's parents have a relationship that follows the Functionalism Theory. Her mom stays at home and cooks, cleans the house and looks after her children. Her dad goes to work to support his family. He is the co-owner of a restaurant called Tabule and works all day, almost everyday to make sure everything is going smoothly at his restaurant. He comes home and helps his wife with anything thing she needs and checks up on his daughters. This goes with the theory of functionalism as it is the "norm" for the wife to stay home and look after the kids, while the father goes to work to earn money for the family. This family is a nuclear family, since they have the parents and children living under one roof. This family also demonstrates the Life Course Approach Theory as Abby and Arthy had meet all the developmental tasks they were supposed to while growing up. For example they had started school when they were both turning 5 years in age. This is a developmental task as that's when most children start school and they are going to be on their own for the first time. They learnt to be independent and how to take care of themselves.
Before they had both started school, Yogeswaran and Jeyamalar had taught them how to dress themselves, taught them to speak both english and tamil and taught them how to behave with their teacher and other students. While in school, Abby's parents had also helped her with her school projects and homework, and how to deal with any problems she had in school. If they couldn't help her with her schoolwork they sent her to tutors, so she could do her best in everything she tried. They had also sent her to extra curricular activities so she could try different things, and she ended up sticking with visual arts and piano. They nurtured her love for art by buying her art supplies and putting anything she made up on the walls. This made Abby want to continue art and make her parents proud. This is an example of the systems theory, since the way Yogeswaran and Jeyamalar reacted to her art, made Abby want to continue doing it and make her want to get better at it.
