It should have been you

I was aiming for Thespan.

I was only aiming for Thespan.

But Thespan moved.

No, not moved.

Thespan hid.

Being an elf, his reflexes were superior and heightened compared to a Terran's. Therefore he was more than aware of the threat heading towards him well before Leopol was.

Which was why my husband was nothing short of confused when the elven prince pulled at his arm and maneuvered his body in front of him.

Like a shield.

The knife pierced Leopol's heart, and he was dead before he realized that he had been stabbed.

No.

He was betrayed.

Thespan gasped and stared at me in horror as if I was the one who didn't just use his lover to save himself.

And like the coward he was, tears sprung to his eyes as he dared hold Leopol in his arms as if to comfort him in his last breaths.

But my husband was already dead.

And those eyes remained on me as if still questioning 'why' even in the afterlife.

But he knew why. Only it wasn't supposed to be him.

"What did you do?" Thespan asked through tears that weren't his to cry.

My attention drifted to the elf prince. "It should have been you."

"No. It should have been you."

Maybe he was right, but I wasn't going to give him any longer to consider it.

I did the first and last thing I could think of.

I ran.
