Locals told of an old well.

It rested on the outskirts of town. Everyone knew where it was - just west of the water pump, into the small stretch of wilderness. It grew thick with trees, and travelers could only get a good look at what was directly in front of them.

Once, the mayor's daughter was fraught with disease, and her life force rapidly diminishing. When the town's water supply ran low, one of the villagers ran off into the woods to heave up a ladle of well water.

The water proved to be miraculous. Almost immediately, all weakness faded from the girl's figure, and she was as healthy as an ox. Whispers spread. The well water had miraculous healing properties. Many villagers flocked to the well to grab their piece of the pie.

But none of them ever came back.

Villagers started disappearing like stones in water. It soon was discerned that they were lost in the struggle of getting well water. Authorities called the once miraculous water source 'cursed,' and warned others against finding it, but teenagers were relentless in such dares and challenges. Children started disappearing, and there was nothing to stop against the wave of adolescent foolishness. The parents could only hope the future generation would tell their children the dangers of the well.

People did wonder how their children disappeared. The forest wasn't dense enough to be lost in, and the railing around the Well wasn't so low that falling in accidentally would be probable.

They were falling in the Well. One local had witnessed one of the children falling in. They all looked a little too far over the edge, and fell in.

He himself had done the same. The only evidence they had of his observation was his video camera, which dropped in the grass by the Well.

Even though precautionary measures were taken, people still sought out the Well's healing properties, or rather, its power to grant wishes. Locals theorized that the water had worked in the mayor's case because the daughter wished desperately to get well, therefore it was granted. No one was able to return since that first local with a sample of well water.

The wonder of the wishing well hasn't faded in children since...
