Description: daddy Michael... that is all
————————————————————————————————
My eyes flicker to the vibrant, red-haired man running across the grass. His laugh, mixed with that of a young child, fills my ears—a warm, content smile forming on my face. I watch this six-foot giant I call me husband attempt to hide behind a tree.
Hide-an-seek was never his kind of game; he actually hated it when he was younger, mostly because he’d never leave his room, video games were much more important. But once Daniel started walking, all he wanted to do was run around with his father and Michael had to keep up with him and his outdoor activities. His favourite game to play with his dad, hide-and-seek of course, probably because finding Michael was so easy due to his hair. In a backyard covered in everything green, that vibrant red hair of his was easily spotted.
Michael looks over at me, a smile from ear to ear as he places his finger to his cherry lips, gesturing me to keep his hiding spot a secret. I giggle quietly, winking at him, hearing Daniel’s faint countdown (which was really him repeating one through five because he didn’t know any other numbers just yet).
“Here I come, daddy!” he shouts, his little legs carrying him to the middle of the yard. His, too-long hair flops up and down with each step and I shake my head. Michael refuses to let me give him a haircut, why, I have no clue! His sun kissed brown hair, covers his eyes—maybe that’s why Michael won’t let me give him a haircut, so he can win a round of hide-and-seek!
To think, I smile, watching my little boy run to the bushes near the fence, my hand rests over my prominent baby bump. Nearly five years ago today, I would have walked away, left Michael forever and never get to live this life. Five of the most amazing years of my life, a wedding where I cried probably every five minutes—those damn vows Michael wrote out that, even to this day, I still cry over. We bought our own place together and a few months after that, I found out I was pregnant with Daniel.
Things were different this time around, I didn’t feel guilty of tell Michael I was pregnant with his baby. We were both happy and I wasn’t afraid. Looking back to the crash, when the world seemed like it was going to end, we were too young to have kids. Whether the crashed happened or not, I don't think we would have been in the right mind set to take care of a baby if we couldn’t even take care of ourselves.
Not to mention, Michael forgetting who I was for eight months—eight of the hardest and most tortuous months of my life. I don't think Michael will ever understand just how hard it was for me to pretend I was only his best friend. I thank, whatever god is up there every day for this man I think of as my soul mate—this new dad, who’s now trying to climb a bloody tree to avoid our son’s wondrous eyes.
“Mommy!” Daniel yells in a panic. “Daddy’s gone!”
I giggle, reaching my arms out for Daniel to run into them. His bright, green eyes filled with joy as he scurries over to me, his small arms locking themselves around my neck as I lift him. “Well baby,” I smile as he buries his face in the crook of my neck, his hair tickling my exposed skin. “Maybe you should try looking, up.”
His head pops up, big eyes looking at mine. I quickly scan his face, always trying to pinpoint whose features he had. “You are all, your father,” I smile, he’s a mini Michael.
