~Beyla's POV~
Kira arrived back at Mr. Hemming's house around five PM the next day, just as he had said she would. I was sitting up in my bedroom when I heard the sound of the front door being opened downstairs and then a soft voice speaking, a voice that was clearly very feminine. Obviously I knew it had to be Kira because it definitely wasn't Mr. Hemming's voice.
I sat there in bed for a moment, wondering if I should go downstairs to greet her, but I decided against it. I wasn't starting work until Monday, so I didn't feel like leaving my room unless I absolutely had to, for using the restroom or getting myself something to eat. Greeting Mr. Hemming's girlfriend fell under neither of those categories, so I didn't feel obligated to leave my room for her. Besides, I highly doubt she cared to meet a maid. It wasn't like my presence really affected her, after all.
My mind made up, I went to go back to watching the show that I had paused on Netflix, but I was interrupted before I could. "Ms. Verdine!" I heard the now familiar voice of Mr. Hemmings call from downstairs, yelling up the stairs for me. My head snapped up and I frowned, hesitating for a second on whether or not I should even respond. Maybe I could just pretend like I hadn't heard him. Then, I decided that was probably not a good idea, being that he was my boss and I certainly didn't want to get fired for outright ignoring him, since I needed this job. "Could you come down here? Kira's here!" He yelled, earning a heavy sigh from me. It seemed I had no choice in the matter of whether or not I wanted to meet this woman right now, because he was going to make me.
I shut my laptop and slid out of bed, combing my fingers through my dark hair hurriedly. "I'm coming!" I called back, hoping that I didn't look like a complete mess. I was just wearing a big black sweater and a pair of black socks that went up to my shin, since I hadn't expected to be leaving my room today. Besides, it wasn't like I had a uniform that I was supposed to wear. Hell, I didn't even have makeup on. Hopefully Kira didn't think I looked like a troll or something, because I had a suspicion that she must've been beautiful, considering Mr. Hemmings himself was rather handsome. A man who looked like that must have been dating a beautiful woman, right?
When I decided that I looked good enough for now, I headed out of my room and quickly walked downstairs. My sock covered feet lightly pattered against the floors as I made it down the stairs, quietly peeking into the entryway by the front door, expecting to see Mr. Hemmings and his girlfriend there. But the entryway was empty, and silence reigned over the room.
Assuming that they must have gone into the living room while waiting for me, I quickly turned around and rounded the corner, finding them just where I suspected they'd be. They were both in the living room. Unfortunately for me, though, I walked in while they were in the middle of a passionate kiss, holding each other in a loving embrace that made me feel incredibly awkward. I stopped in the middle of the room when I realized what I was interrupting and grew very uncomfortable, feeling as if I were intruding on something that I shouldn't have been. I wanted to leave. Witnessing affection between people was never something that I knew how to deal with.
Luckily for me, though, Mr. Hemmings seemed to have sensed my presence when I came to a stop just behind them, somehow, because he quickly pulled away from his girlfriend. He and Kira both turned to face me and his long arm slithered its way around her slim waist, her head coming up to his jaw. She was really quite tall, especially for a woman. Not to mention that she was drop dead gorgeous, just as I had expected.
Kira was tall and slim, quite like a model, and I couldn't help but to wonder how she managed to have a noticeable thigh gap even as she stood beside my boss. I hadn't ever had a thigh gap in my entire life. My eyes trailed over her angular facial features that were framed by the long, dark brown tresses of her hair that stopped just above her small chest. Her eyes were a light blue color and her brows were absolutely perfect, as was the makeup on her face. And with her straight nose and plump lips, it was very clear to see how beautiful she was. I wondered briefly if she actually was a model.
Feeling a bit intimidated by being in front of not only my boss but also his very pretty girlfriend, I couldn't find it in me to greet her. I was struck completely silent, as if it could offend one of them if I spoke to her first, and instead just stood there stupidly while waiting for someone to say something. Luckily for me, Mr. Hemmings did me the favor, though he probably only did it because he knew that we'd just be standing around in awkward silence if he didn't. "Ms. Verdine," He greeted me professionally, as was expected from him. I gave him a polite nod back and looked up at him, feeling even smaller than him when I didn't have any shoes on to boost me up at least a little. "Mr. Hemmings." I greeted back, flicking my eyes over to the tall woman beside him with her arm around him.
I went to greet her, deciding I should get my shit together if I wanted to keep this job for longer than a week, but I was beaten to the punch before I could. Mr. Hemmings saw my eyes flick over to her and his blue ones did the exact same, appearing to be much softer when he gazed at her. "This is Kira, my girlfriend. I'm sure you remember me telling you about her." He introduced her to me, and I sent her a small smile and a wave that felt far beyond pathetic. I could only hope it didn't look like it, too.
Kira smiled back at me, displaying a set of pearly white teeth, and stared straight into my brown eyes with her blue pair. "Hello." She practically chirped, her tone nothing but one of friendliness. Her eyes shone with sincerity when she smiled at me, not looking falsely happy at all. It made me feel much more comfortable than before, knowing that she seemed to be a nice and genuine person. "Hello. I'm Beyla." I said, still feeling a little bit shy. She was nice, but pretty people still intimidated me and she was most certainly pretty. "So you're the new maid, then?" She asked in a curious tone, cocking her head to the side as she surveyed my appearance, looking me up and down. I gave her a quick nod and she furrowed her brows, frowning slightly. "But you're so young! And beautiful!" She exclaimed, seemingly perplexed.
Unable to help it, I flushed bright red at the compliment, feeling incredibly flattered that she thought I was beautiful. I wasn't even wearing makeup, either. Something about receiving compliments from a girl just felt much more flattering to me than from a man. Perhaps it was because so many women saw beauty as a competition, so I found it very flattering to get one from a girl.
"T-Thank you." I stuttered, losing my cool for a moment. Kira seemed amused at my flustered reaction, blue eyes flickering with mirth while she grinned. Mr. Hemmings, on the other hand, eyed me closely, as if he were observing a lab rat. I tried not to squirm under his intense stare, wondering if it was fair for one man to be so very intense and intimidating.
"Don't you agree, babe? She's so cute!" Kira continued, looking up at her boyfriend. Mr. Hemmings stared at me, his face completely impassive, and then diverted his eyes down to Kira. "Isn't she?" She grinned. My arms crossed shyly over my chest and I awkwardly looked down at my toes, not bothering to push it back when a strand of hair fell into my face. I was now feeling embarrassed, very embarrassed. This was an incredibly unusual situation to be in, or at least for me. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before.
Instead of directly responding to her question, Mr. Hemmings slipped his way around the subject. "Ms. Verdine probably has some more unpacking that she needs to do." He said, causing me to flood with relief.
I looked up and nodded my head, knowing very well that I actually had no unpacking left to do whatsoever. That had been taken care of the first day I got here. "Yes." I agreed hurriedly, wanting to go back upstairs into my room. Kira seemed plenty nice, but I didn't exactly want to stick around down here to hang around with my boss and his girlfriend. That'd be awkward and weird.
Mr. Hemmings looked down at me once again and gave me a light nod of his head, silently dismissing me to go back to my room now that Kira and I had met. Taking the opportunity as soon as it was presented to me, I spun around and stalked out of the living room, entering the entryway. I was barely out of the room before I heard Kira speak to him again. "You didn't even answer my question." She complained, sounding as if she were pouting at him. He let out a sigh and I couldn't help but to stop, just for a second. "She's my employee, Ki. A maid. The last thing I would ever notice about her is how she looks. As long as she does her job, I don't care what she looks like." He said, making me feel weirdly embarrassed. It wasn't that I wanted him to find me attractive, but at the same time, it didn't really feel nice to know that perhaps he found me unappealing and ugly.
My face flushed with humiliation as I grasped the banister on the staircase, heading up the stairs quickly. Of course, though, not before he said one last thing. "Besides," He began, sounding much more teasing than he had seconds prior. "Why would I be attracted to that when I've got you right here?"
