At around 12 am, I woke up to a light and humming. It wasn't very loud, but it pulsed through the walls, giving everything a small vibration. I groggily raised my head to look around the room. A ghostly white light peeked through the blinds, casting slits of bluish-white on the carpet.

As I looked around the room, I noticed Terry's bed was empty. The blankets and pillows were carelessly tossed aside. I shot out of bed and slowly walked to the open door. Once I got in the hallway, I noticed my mom's door was open too. I walked out of the apartment but didn't need to unlock the door because it was already open. Wherever they were going, it was in a hurry.

As I walked down the hallway, I noticed several other doors were open too. The light was stronger towards the door to the roof. The humming was getting louder too. It caused a dull throbbing in my ears, like when you're on a landing plane.

I burst up onto the roof and was met with a strong, warm breeze blowing into my face. I looked up at the dark night sky, across the cityscape of Mesquite. It was a clear night, and the sky was dotted with billions of stars, like scattered glitter. There was a patch of sky that looked like it was radiating heat, that was distorted, blending the straight into blobs. When I concentrated, I noticed that the breeze seemed to be coming from that patch of air. The breeze had turned into a powerful wind that threatened to push me over, so I squinted harder. I saw behind the shimmer, a metallic surface gleaming in the moonlight.

I scanned the rest of the buildings and saw the same shimmer on other apartment buildings. Several buildings were also on fire, starting at the top of the building, and burning their way down, a stark contrast to the deep night. A siren went off in the distance, then another. The wind started roaring, and I saw the shimmer start to dissipate. For seconds, I could see a giant ship. It was made of a material with a cross between metal and rock, and was oblong, with several ridges, slightly pointed at the front, and flat at the back. I could see figures inside the ship and moving in the small window bay.

I ran towards it, my heart throbbing in tune with my ears, which were now hurting because of the loud thumping sound I now knew was emitting from the ship. Suddenly, it started rising as the bottom began to glow like a flame on a stove. I screamed, and everything went white.
