I take Harry's hand and lead him out the front door.
"Where are we going?"
"You'll see."
"Actually, I can't see because you told me to close my eyes."
"Well, you'll see in a second."
I pull his hand and lead him over to an adjacent building to the main house. My dad's pride and joy, other than me of course, is in this building. I unlock the side door and guide Harry inside. I stop and stand beside him.
"Okay. Open your eyes."
Harry opens his eyes and they immediately almost pop out of his head.
"Holy shit!"
I smile at his reaction. The building, or garage if you could call a building this large that, has about a dozen of my dad's cars in it. He has new cars and vintage cars and rare cars. He was a bit of a collector of sorts.
"These are all your dad's?"
"Yeah, these are most of them. There's two more at the apartment."
He walks through the cars, gently running his fingers down them as he goes by. Peeking in the windows and checking each one out. He walks straight past the new Lamborghini and the new Ferrari and heads to an older, vintage car.
"Oh my god. This is one of my favourite cars. I don't think I've ever seen one in person."
"Yeah, the Aston Martin. That was my dad's favourite too."
He's beaming as he runs his hands over it as he circles the car, ogling it like he often ogles me.
"Do you want to drive it?"
"What?" he says, a mixture of shock and excitement on his face. "No, I couldn't."
"Why not? Who else is going to drive it?"
I can see he is still not quite sure.
"I have an idea. Let me lock up the house first."
When I'm inside the main house again, I make a quick phone call as part of my plan, careful not to let Harry hear me. Once the house is secure and I grab my purse from the other car, I hand the keys to the Aston Martin to Harry and open the garage door.
"You're going to take me somewhere. Another Wilson family property."
"Maggie, are you sure?"
"My gut says to do it and I've been trusting it a lot lately."
He smirks at my response. He walks around the car to open my door for me. I slide in and he shuts the door for me before walking around to the driver's side. He starts the engine and the car rumbles to life. Harry's smile grows until his face is just all dimples. He is going to love this drive.
To call the drive we are taking a scenic drive would be a massive understatement. The drive from Vancouver up the highway to the resort town of Whistler is called the Sea-to-Sky Highway for a reason. The road winds with the ocean on one side and high mountains on the other side. Small and large waterfalls dot the mountainside and the water in the ocean here appears teal blue due to the freshwater on the surface of the salty ocean water. Harry goes back and forth between having his hand on my thigh to on the gear shift and I can tell if this car wasn't a favourite of his, he would have much rather taken a car with an automatic transmission.
We finally make it up to my parent's place. It's just outside the main town. My parents would describe it as the ski cabin but it's anything but a rustic cabin. It's modest compared to their other home, but really what isn't. It's a two-story house on about an acre of land, facing the mountains. It has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. A hot tub sits on the balcony. The only downside in the winter is that it isn't ski-in ski-out but there isn't anything of this size that is. We pull in the driveway and hop out of the car.
