I haul myself into the air, and fall square on my target. My forehead slams hard into his chest, but I don’t mind that, because it hurts him too. In fact, it hurts him more.

Ash screams.

He immediately springs up. He looks at me, rubbing his chest. I feel the anger in my eyes, staring- digging- into him.

“Vanessa?”

“WHAT IS SO AMUSING ABOUT SLEEPING ON HARDWOOD FLOORS!? IT’S NOT EVEN CARPETED!”

“But Vanessa, why are you yelling at me?” He looks at my dress. “Oh! Are you waking me up for homecoming?”

“It’s over.” I snark in his face. I pin him to the ground. “You wasted $20 for nothing.”

“No! What!? What time is it!?” He grabs his phone, but instead of being able to look at the time, a hundred text messages from me flood out. Some are from Alistair. Like this one:

Alistair: Hey dude, are you alive? I’ve been waiting here for a good thirty minutes. 6:46 PM

“You completely ditched me! I was dateless!”

“Look, tell me you’re just joking.”

“Just why do you have to sleep on the ground every single day?” I grouch.

“Well I mean like…” He rubs his eyes. And takes a clear look at me. “Oh god! Vanessa! You didn’t plan that extreme for homecoming right!? You hair is canary yellow! You didn’t have to like dye it-”

“Shut up!” I scream. Ash sends an apology text to Alistair, quickly. I cross my arms, looking around my boyfriend’s room- which does not contain a bed, not anymore. It did a week ago, I mean I’m not sure if he ever used it, I guess he didn’t, or else why would he get rid of it?

“Look Vanessa, I am so sorry.”

“Too late.” I snap.

“And do you mind if I ask you, like… What is wrong with your eyebrows? They look a little bit darker.” Let’s hope that Ash is the only one with sharp enough eyes.

“Look, my hair went wrong, my eyebrows went wrong, my life went wrong, my stupid boyfriend went wrong!” I scream the last part in his face.

Both of my parents come home from work, while Zolton and I were watching TV, I almost couldn’t stand that show anymore, because the girl’s boyfriend is brave, always there for her, and even though it doesn’t exactly say, I’m pretty sure he doesn’t oversleep on hardwood floors. What a perfect boyfriend! I got so mad, I cursed the girl.

“Chill, Canary Yellow! It’s just an actress, it’s not even real!” Zolton reminded me. I blushed.

“Whatever.”

“Vanessa!” Mom suddenly rushes over smiling, she gives me a big hug. “How was homecoming!?”

“It was awesome.” I lie.

“Oh I’m sure it was.”

“Malex was crowned second homecoming queen.” I say, Zolton snorts and starts laughing really hard. “Zolton! Stop! She’s my best friend!” He tries but fails to stop. I roll my eyes.

“Did you and Ash have the time of your lives, Honey?” My mother winks, remembering how I Always brag about how I’m going to have a great time with him.

“In fact, I did.” I lie, smiling. “He was sweeter than usual.”

“That’s great!”

“It is.”
