First Date

Id been working at the betting shop for a few months now. My job was to get the punters to bet as much money as they could, of course we were fixing the races, so they always won. It may not be alot but loyalty was a key part of the Shelby company.

"here love, run these books to John, then start on the next lot" Polly instructed. I smiled taking the books with me. John was up by the chalk board writing down the odds.

"the books as requested, Mr Shelby" I said as I approached him. John smirked "right on time Miss Lee as always"

"I do aim to please sir" I winked and walked back to my desk. There was constant flirting between us, nothing would come of it. We were just friends who kissed and sometimes get a bit carried away before realising what may happen.

We all finished work around 5pm, it became a routine to go to the Garrison after work for a few drinks.

Almost always I ended up singing. I had a talent that only a few would ever hear, I would never be a household name, the Garrison was great but it was nothing compared to the clubs in London. Thats were the real talent performed.

I was at the bar getting a drink after singing, when a guy man approached me. He was handsome, tall and had beautiful green eyes.

"lovely singing there Miss, you must have been a angel sent from above with a voice like that" he smiled.

"thank you, but im not that good. I just do it because I love it" I thanked him.

"beautiful voice to match such a beautiful face" god he was a charmer, but nothing compared to John.

I blushed "I have a feeling we have met before do I know you?" I asked.

Smiling he replied " we have in deed met before, we went to school together, Henry Turner, you punched me in the face because I was in your way"

I chuckled "sorry about that, I had a terrible temper back then, let me get you a drink to say sorry all those years ago"

He smiled "how about you go on a date with me, then I might accept your apology. What do you say Miss Lee?"

I thought for a couple of seconds and smiled through my eyelashes "you have yourself a deal Mr Turner"

"great, how about tomorrow. Pick you up at 7pm outside the corner shop" he said with a huge smile.

"sounds perfect, I will see you then" I said grabbing my drink.

"see you then" Henry said rejoining his friends.

I walked back to the Shelbys table, and sat next to Ada. She had the biggest grin painted on her face.

"what are you so happy about? I asked.

" what just happened there, is someone going on a date tomorrow?" Ada asked nudging me.

Johns attention switched to me and Ada.

" who's got a date tomorrow? " he shouted gaining the other Shelbys attention.

I gave Ada a pointed look. I sighed

"its nothing, Henry Turner just asked if I wanted to go on a date tomorrow and I accepted. We went to school together, he is a really nice young man" I explained.

Tommy looked at Arthur and John, before speaking " if he breaks your heart, we will break his face. Be home by 9.30 no later or there will be trouble" Tommy ordered.

I rolled my eyes "not being funny boys, but im old enough to make my own choices, I can take care of myself. Plus since when do I answer to you lot."

After a few more drinks I went home, tomorrow I would be going on my first date , and I was extremely excited but at the same time nervous, I had never been alone with a boy other than John Shelby.

The next day went quickly, I finished work and went home to get ready for my date. I kept my hair down leaving it to fall naturally. I put on a blue dress falling past my knees.

It was 6.45 and I had finished getting ready. I made my way to the corner shop, where Henry was stood waiting with a bunch of flowers.

"sorry to keep you waiting Henry" I said making my presence known. He turned and smiled widely.

"wow, you look beautiful" he said taking every inch of me in.

I blushed, Henry offered his arm and we walked to the Italian restaurant a few doors down. The night went really well, we both laughed about school and talked about what we want to be doing in 5 years time. 

"I've always imagined that by the time im 19 I will be married, and then I would be walking around with a big pregnant belly, and my husband and I will live a long happy life, growing old and grey, watching our children grow up and raise their children." I said with a smile on my face. For a long time I thought that would be me and John, but we're just friends.

Our date came to and end, Henry walked me home.

"Well I guess this is where we say goodbye, unless you want to go on a second date?" Henry asked standing in front of me with hopeful eyes. 

"I would love to go out with you again" I smiled

Henry stepped closer "Good, I will see you soon" he said placing a kiss on my cheek, inches from my lips

That night I went to bed, I thought maybe this was my chance, to find happiness, John was interested in me in that way. Even though Henry was lovely, not once did I feel the butterflies in my stomach like I do with John.

Henry and I went on a few more dates over the weeks, he made me laugh, treated me like a princess. We kissed and it was nice, we had been spending as much time together as we could and I think I'm starting to really fall for him.
