Dropping down into the crater of the former C.E.N.T.R.E. facility was like walking right back into a nightmare. She caught herself wishing it was a mirage. Like if she got closer, she would find it was an illusion all along.
The reality of it was much, much worse. Inside her forcefield, Jenn hadn't been able to see any of the destruction. Now, it was impossible to avoid. Every fallen ceiling, every crumpled wire; it was all because of her. Jenn placed a hand on a nearby door that had been halfway torn out of the wall. She did this. Jenn closed her eyes, feeling the ragged edges and trying to connect herself to this with all five senses. It still didn't feel real, it still didn't connect.
"Where are the trapped agents?" Jenn asked, swallowing down another wave of self-hatred. If she could just undo some of what she did...
"You're gonna need to give me a moment," her sister replied. When Jenn turned to face her, her eyes were shut in concentration. "I've got C.E.N.T.R.E. in one ear and S.H.I.E.L.D. in the other. And everyone's talking at once."
So Jenn waited. Not patiently, mind. She tapped her foot rapidly, viciously aware of each second that ticked on. Her gaze swept over the crater, heart sinking lower with each pass.
"And of course the S.H.I.E.L.D. guys don't know where they are," her sister went on as Jenn's stare continued to flit around, her breathing picking up speed. "Wait, someone just mentioned the infirmary." A million and one things called to her attention. The burst pipes, the bus-sized piles of rubble...How could she focus on just one thing? "Well, that's not very helpful. We've got two of those."
She would do it because she had to.
That was the one thing that grounded her from the outset, wasn't it? Saving people? All those months ago, the final push she needed to overcome the Limiter was her desire to protect Dev. This time, Jenn needed to push herself.
Jenn forced down the lump in her throat. "So we split up," she said, dabbing at the wetness that had collected by her eyes.
There was a kind of hesitation in her sister's stare - like she wasn't sure whether or not to comment on the state of Jenn's eyes. In the end, she just settled on, "Fair enough. Should be immediately obvious if we have the wrong one." She pointed across the crater and two storeys up. "The easiest one to access should be just down that hall. I'll take the one by the personnel barracks."
"See you in five," Jenn replied.
She was already hovering as she spoke. All she was waiting for was her sister's nod, and then she was off.
Immediately upon touching down in the exposed corridor, she knew she had the right one. Voices echoed from down the hall and she ran over. Some of the hall lights were still working, though they flickered occasionally. The scene showed a man with a S.H.I.E.L.D. insignia on each shoulder attempting to push a fallen section of ceiling that was blocking off the rest of the hall.
As Jenn made her way over, the man's grip slipped. He huffed, stepping back and looking around. "Do you have anything on your side we can use to leverage it?" He called, too focused on the task at hand to notice Jenn's arrival.
"Hold on, I'm gonna look," came the muffled reply.
Should be easy enough, Jenn figured. She held out a hand, feeling for the magnetic signature of the metal rebar in the slab of ceiling. Within moments, she had a solid hold on the thing and was steadily lifting it into the air.
"Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!" The nearest agent called, only to suddenly drop his victory pose when he saw the stunned faces of the two agents on the other side. But if they weren't doing anything either...
