┃CHAPTER FOUR┃
"I can't stop thinking about her."
ELENA IGNORED THE UNKNOWN CALLER, pressing the red decline button and slipping it into her back pocket. She wasn't in the exact mood to have a conversation with anyone right now, she needed to hunt for funeral clothes--wistfully enough, she lost all of her black attire when she set her childhood house to flames. Digging through a chest, it wasn't until she felt a vibration. It was quite odd that unknown callers would leave anyone a message. Either way, Elena decided to listen to the message.
"Hi, Elena Gilbert. It's not crucial who I am, but what I'm about to tell you is. Your friend, Kennedy, is missing and she's in great jeopardy if you don't find her soon. This is not a threat, but a warning. What happened was cruel and unusual but—I gotta go. I hope you find her soon." The line disconnected, a soft female voice spoke through the phone—almost in a reticent tone.
She glanced up at the door way, Damon sending her a puzzled expression. "Who was that?" He asked, slowly approaching the frazzled girl.
"It—It's about Kennedy. She should've been back by now—How have we not noticed?" Elena's voice trembled, her hands shaking as she grasped the phone in one hand.
Damon pursed his lips, looking at Elena with gentle eyes. His heart ached at the sight of her like this. "Kennedy is fine. She can take care of herself, Elena. And she's been gone for a day, that's what her letter said, right?" He tried to reason with the brunette. She looked at him, emotions frazzled and she shook her head.
Damon and Kennedy never played fair with each other, it wasn't a surprise that he would brush the idea off that she was in danger. Elena would admit there were a few previous situations that she feared Damon, but Kennedy? Not once.
She could stare straight into his eyes and not flinch at any of his movements. Almost as if she stared into the devil's eyes, Kennedy would be able to play the same game. Despite all Damon had done to her, she never stooped down to his level.
Kennedy knew she would protect any one of her friends if that meant she would die, even for Damon—but she would never admit that. She cared too much for the people in her life.
Empathy, her worst enemy.
Elena quickly redialed the call, but the only voice that answered a call was a female robot, claiming there was an operational error with who she was trying to reach.

"And then I woke up in the same spot, just practically two decades later." Kennedy huffed, leaning back into her chair. She ran a hand through her hair, grasping on the sides as she groaned. She couldn't tell if Kai was making her headache reappear or maybe she injured herself poorly yesterday. Her hand felt around her scalp, sucking in her breath as she felt a knot and a scab.
