"Chapter 5"⚠︎
Tony"Sara!" I shout. "It's time for school, get up!" I burst into her bedroom.
She starts mumbling in her sleep, not waking up.
I huff, annoyed, and go sit on her bed and gently shake her shoulder. "Sara, we have to go to school. We're gonna be late."
Sara startles awake. "I can't be late! Mr. Love is going to teach us ta read!"
"Exactly, get up." I move to her dresser and pick out her clothes. Usually, I just throw them at her for her to put on herself, but something compels me to stay this time.
My daughter tiredly gets up. I kneel and I steady her before removing her pajamas and replacing them with a red shirt and black overall shorts. Once she's dressed, I point to the bathroom. "Go potty then meet me by the door. I've got your bag."
"But breakfast. Can I have toast?"
If I do that, we'll be late and Toby will be disappointed.
Instead, I grab a vine of grapes and thrust them into her hand when she joins me. "There you go, now come on."
"Thank you for the food, Daddy." She follows me quickly.
"Yeah, yeah." I strap her in and start the car.
"What's a penis?"
"What?!" my head snaps back. "Who told you that word?"
"Some boys were arguing about it on the playground. Someone said their peepee was able to pee farther and someone told them they're a dummy 'cause it's called a penis."
"You'll learn about them when you're older. Most girls like you pee from, you know, where you pee from, but most boys have something different there. A little stick to pee out of. That's the penis. You aren't allowed to touch them or look at them. And if someone tries to make you, tell me or a trusted adult immediately."I explain.
"So you have a little stick? Mr. Love has a little stick?" She giggles.
"Daddy has a big stick, but yes"
"But Mr. Love is small." She nods.
"Everyone's a different size" I cringe, not liking the way this is going. In terms of genital education, this has got to be the worst attempt.
"Can daddies poop out babies like some mommies?"
I chuckle. "No, you got a special tummy chamber for babies" I reach back and tickle her tummy. "we don't have that."
She giggles. "But some daddies can, right?"
"Yeah." I nod.
"That sounds really cool," she nods and eats her grapes, watching the cars go by.
We make it to school only three minutes late and I usher her out and into the school. I walk her to her classroom again, more to see Toby than to comfort her.
"Look who finally got here." Toby gives Sara a high-five and she goes to talk to two kids, the 'polka-dotted' boy and the deaf girl.
Toby smirks at me. "How are you this morning, Mr. Díez?"
"Rushed." I grunt.
"Sounds like you." He looks at his nails and I know he's making a partial jab, teasing me.
"Me bein' here this early is a miracle and you should appreciate it." I punch his shoulder.
"Oh no, you broke my shoulder."
