I answered the phone knowing it was the principal of the school. One of the kids snitched. God I sound like a teenager. Does that come with raising one?
"Mr. Purdy, I would like to have a word with you. In person. Now would be wonderful. And Starr will be present." Then she hung up. That's weird, but she's pissed.
"Well.. looks like I'm going back to the school."
"I heard. She's so close to graduation babe. Don't fuck it up for her."
"Thanks for the motivation. See you in a bit." Then I kissed her before leaving. I drove back to the school in the same clothes I dropped her off in. I wonder how they spun it. All I said was to stop bullying her. Or I'd talk to their parents. Isn't that something a rational parent would do?
I walked into the school as the students where changing classes. I got quite a few stares. Girls eyeing me like candy. That I'm used to. Boys were staring out of jealousy. And I finally made it to her office.
"Hey Becca. She ready for me?" We where practically on a first name basis.
"She is. And Starr's there. What'd you do this time?"
"Guess we'll find out." Then I walked in her office. Starr didn't look too thrilled to see me. She recorded the damn thing. I sat in the chair next to her.
"I understand your concern for your daughter's safety. Not all parents care for their children like others. But, threatening to talk to their parents? School's almost done for the summer Mr. Purdy. I'd hate Starr start college with a bad reputation."
"So you expect me to stand by as they bully her? She's been going through this all year. You had your chance for discipline. Look at her arms!" I grabbed her arm showing the scars. Starr jerked it back.
"Don't touch me!"
"And she's had her chance to come to me privately. I can't do anything unless she or the bully comes forward."
"That's bullshit! Shouldn't you be more aware of how they're treating each other?!" I'm pissed. The principal or the guidance councilor should be more awake.
"I warned you about swearing. And I understand you're angry. She only has a few more weeks. Then she graduates."
"So what? No discipline just because they're graduating? They shouldn't be allowed to get away with everything! That's not how the real world works."
"We'll figure something out. Until then, no more interacting with the students. I understand you're famous. But what you did this morning was unnecessary. And uncalled for. I will be the one to hand disciplinary actions on school grounds. Are we clear?"
"Crystal." I grabbed Starr by the arm and pulled her with me. I'm not leaving her here. Not for another minute.
"Dad! I still have classes! Let me go!" She was trying to pull herself out of my grip.
"You're not going. I'm taking you home."
"You're fucking up my college tuition! I need those classes! Let me go!"
I just ignored her. She can make up the classes online.
"I hate you! I fucking hate you! It's not always about you, you ungrateful asshole!"
I stopped dead in my tracks. She never said 'I hate you'. At least not to my face.
"You wanna go to college that bad? Then go. Don't come crying when they pick on you again."
I let her arm go and got into the car. She ran back into the school. I was pissed. So pissed I ran a red light. Someone's car collided with mine, pinning me to the passengers seat. All I remember is going to the school and leaving.
