First Days

Holly looked at her schedule. She had xylomancy first with Hufflepuffs. Weird, she thought humans forgot about most magic. Now learning that they have magic and also more nature tuned magic was weird. She got downstairs early to see Artemis eating an apple while reading a book. She knew about how the houses hated each other, but this is Artemis. Someone who has tried hard to save the world in his own weird way. She gets stares as she walks up to him. "I hope that's not the only thing you are planning to eat or I might have to tell Butler"

"You know as well as I why Butler should not be worried like that. But I did eat a sandwich earlier. I'm not going to forgo my own health for the sake of learning magic" Artemis didn't even look up from his book. She peaked around his shoulder and saw it was runes. Oddly enough they were close to fairy runes. Too close.

"Yeah well I'm going to have to watch over you till we get back" She was getting annoyed with all the stares. She nodded and turned away. Her steps quick as she sat at the Gryffindor table. She should probably eat since xylomancy is in the north tower which is far away. A sandwich gone and she was on the move. Artemis left to whatever class he had first. The cold empty halls were all Holly saw as she walked north. They really should have been given a map.

Holly finally reached the tower. A ladder was all that was there. She climbed up and nearly choked. God, smells worse than a dwarf's behind. She coughed as Hermione pulled  Holly into the seat next to her. "It stinks" was the first thing she said. Holly nodded, but couldn't say anything. She felt like if she took the slightest breath it will clog up her lungs and kill her.

The teacher stood up and Holly is now questioning if humans actually were connected to magic as she thought.

Meanwhile Artemis was in History of Magic. The teacher, a ghost, was droning on about something. After a short panic session where he thought it was one of those fey overlords who wanted to take over earth. He shuddered at the memory. The person next to him, a ravenclaw, was fast asleep. The teacher didn't know anyone was asleep.  Artemis sighed and took out the rune book. Or that's what people would think. It was actually a 'dark magic' book. A book about the soul and how it could be manipulated. A very interesting subject. It was more interesting then the pathetic class that is this. Goblin wars... oh secret wars. He remembered reading about it in Foaly's database. The ghost had good taste. Sadly in the wrong part of it.

He got to the part about how you can destroy souls with just magic although you had to be a certain class? He did have more books by this author and even her fiction books were interesting. He should try and find her so one day they can sit and talk. A passage interested him more then anything. 'The soul can be separated at the cost of humanity is a common saying in the wizarding world. As my father proved otherwise, you can completely remove the soul. Although it takes very strong magic, so creatures with an inordinate amount of magic can in fact use this trick. Death is the most well known of these. It can take a full soul and only a strong desire can make people stay around as ghosts. The separation is a painful process. More painful if you can't get rid of the entire soul. Normal wizards found the trick to this and it is called 'horcruxes'. The more horcruxes, the less humanity a wizard will have. Here are a few runes that can help make the separation of a soul easier. I suppose if you found this you wouldn't use it for evil since I added wards as you might have noticed' and then there were a lot of runes that reminded him of the alphabet in The Book.

Someone tapped his shoulder and he turned to look at them. Oh it was just Draco. "Artemis, we are going to be late if you don't get up."  Artemis nodded as he followed after Draco. They quickly walked to their next class. The same class he shares with Holly. They walked towards the classes to see that they were the last two to enter. The teacher wasn't around and the only spot open was behind Harry and Ron. Artemis made eye contact with Holly. She smiled as he sat behind Harry. Not a sound was heard as everyone waited for the teacher.

After a few minutes where Artemis was about to leave, the door swung open. A man was standing there, tall with greasy hair and black clothing that could put any emo in shame. His cloak billowed as he walked towards the front. "All of you are most likely going to fail if you are like all the idiots I normally have to teach. So we'll get started" He glanced at Harry is disdain. "Harry Potter, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?"

Artemis raised his eyebrow while Draco laughed slightly. Artemis glared at Draco and Snape. Switching between the two. Harry stared at the desk. "I... I don't know"

Snape huffed as he glared at Harry. "Of course you wouldn't. Where can I find a bezoar?"

Harry shrugged as he stared at the table.

Snape glared at Harry. "What's the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?" Artemis looked around. The Slytherins were laughing quietly while the Gryffindors were either looking away, glaring, or raising their hand. More Holly and Hermione were raising their hands.

Harry pointed at Holly and Hermione. "They seem to know"

Snape just looked over in disdain. "Most likely not.  See here Potter, if you add powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood you will get Drought of the Living Dead.  You can find a bezoar in the stomach of a goat and there is no difference between monkshood and wolfsbane. Well why aren't you all copying this down." Artemis sighed. He was writing it down. This teacher didn't really seem like a good teacher and that's one of the things that annoys Artemis the most. People like Snape are the reason people grow up to be morons.

Everyone quickly went to go get their notes. Snape walked forward and waved his wand. He wrote down the instructions for a potion to cure boils and everyone started to follow  the instructions. Draco immediately started only glancing at Artemis at the beginning. Artemis quickly started following the instructions. He had to stop Draco from throwing a few of their ingredients into Harry's cauldron. Later some other Gryffindors cauldron blew up and the liquid got everywhere. The boy's skin broke into boils. Snape started to talk to the kid about how much a failure he is. Artemis rolled his eyes.

"Professor, I can take the kid to the infirmary" Artemis raised his hand. A lot of people stared at him as if he just suggested to kill someone. Snape blinked as he just nods a bit stunned. Artemis stood up and grabbed the kid with boils. He started walking towards the infirmary. The boy was very scared.

"So... you're not going to hex me?" He asked as Artemis shook his head.

"That is idiotic to make enemies even with the conflicting houses. Besides I need a few things from there anyway. Saves me the trouble"

"Oh... I'm Neville Longbottom"

"Artemis Fowl"
