Dracula is a 1897 gothic horror novel by Irish writer Bram Stoker. It introduces the character of Count Dracula, and established many conventions of subsequent vampire fantasy.

When Stoker wrote Dracula, many other writer were writing tales in which fantastic creatures threatened the British Empire. Invasion literature was at a peak and Stoker's formula was very familiar to the readers of fantastic adventure stories.

Victorian readers enjoyed  Dracula, but it did not reach its legendary status until later in the 20th century when film versions began to appear.

Before writing this book, Stoker spent seven years researching European folklore and stories of vampires.

Some historians are convinced that a historic figure, Vlad III Dracula, often called Vlad the Impaler, was the model for Stoker's Count although there is no supporting evidence.

Dracula was not the first vampire novel ever written. Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe published The bride of Corinth in 1797. Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla was published in 1871. John Polidon created the image of a vampire portrayed as an aristocratic man, like the character of Dracula, in his tale 'The vampire' (1819). Polidon wrote his story during the summer which he spent with Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein), her husband P. B. Shelley and Lord Byron in 1816.

Well, it seems that vampire stories have always been popular.

Happy reading!
