This is a novel by Emily Brontë published in 1847 under her pseudonym Ellis Bell. Her only finished novel, it was written between October 1845 and June 1846.
Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë's Agnes Grey were accepted by a publisher before the success of their sister Charlotte's novel Jane Eyre.
Although now it is a classic of English literature, contemporaneous reviews were deeply polarized; it was controversial because of its unusually stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty and it challenged Victorian ideas about religion, morality, class and woman's place in society.
Wuthering Heights was influenced by romanticism, Walter Scott's novels, gothic fiction and Byron. The moorland setting is significant.
The novel has inspired many adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations, a musical, a ballet, and operas.
It inspired a hit song, too. Wuthering Heights, a song by Kate Bush, was released as her debut in 1978. It received a widespread critical acclaim and continues to be highly regarded.
I think it's a great song, capturing the atmosphere of the novel perfectly (I added the video for you).
Happy (re)reading!
