The drive home from school was long and awkward. Grandma kept trying to start a conversation, but I was lost in my own thoughts. Why is Derrick mad at me even though I only talked to him once? I wouldn't even call it a conversation. Come on Lilly, your getting pathetic, who cares about Derrick? He has a girlfriend anyway..

We were home in about ten minutes and I was already missing school. Wow. I actually missed school. Im as surprised as you are. Lady ran up to us barking and wagging her tail, happy that she wasn't alone anymore even if she was only alone for about twenty minutes. I pet her head and walked into the kitchen with her happily following behind me. 

"Lilly, would you like a snack? How about some apples?" Grandma asked

"I would love some." I replied.

She washed off two apples in the sink and walked over to the drawer to get a knife. While she was cutting them the door bell rang. 

"Can you get that sweet heart? My hands are full." She asked

I walked out of the kitchen and over to the door and slowly opened it. On the other side stood the girl I over heard talking outside of Betty's, the one who hangs out with Derrick. I think her name is Jade. 

"Hey, I'm Jade." She said and held out her hand.

"Hi, I'm Lilly." I said slowly and shook her hand.

"I know." she told me. 

She then gave me a small smile and handed me a big basket filled with bread, fruit, and cheese with a sign in elegant script that said "Welcome"

"My mom is the mayor and when she learned you moved here she wanted me to bring you this to welcome you." She told me

When I looked behind her onto the street I saw the truck she got into the afternoon outside of Betty's. I could faintly make out the outline of a boy in the front seat.

"Well hello Jade!" I heard my grandma exclaim behind me. Jeeze, does everyone know each other in this town?

"Hello Mrs. Smith." She called to my grandma, using her maiden name. 

"What are you doing here dear?" My grandma asked her.

"I go to the same high school as Lilly and My mom wanted me to come her and give her this." She handed grandma the basket.

"Well isnt this lovely! Tell your mother thank you!" Grandma said

"I will." Jade said and checked her watch. 

"I have to go. See you at school Lilly!" She told me and left. 

We both walked back to the kitchen and started snacking on the apples Grandma cut. 

"Jade and her brother, Leo, are so nice, don't you think?" She asked.

"Mmmhmm." I replied, even though I have never met Leo and this is the first time I have talked to Jade.

After I finished eating my apples, I went up stairs into my room. I flopped down on my bed, entered Erin's number into my phone, and texted her. Then I grabbed my laptop and checked my e-mail. 

-two missed e-mails- 

The first one was from Izzy. The whole letter was just telling me about how life was for her and Char and asking me questions about my new school, like, if I made any friends, and If their were cute guys at my new school. I immediately thought about Derek.
