Finally the first day of middle school arrived and my nerves were tenser than they ever had been. The fear of being in middle school was termendous. All the new faces, teachers, terrain, and schedules was probably enough to frighten all the upcoming students. Well all accept for Grace of course.
She was overzelous about all of it. Never in my life can I recount someone being able to look fear dead in the eyes and smile like she did. To this day I wonder if she really was that couragous, or was it a carefully placed game to seem like nothing could faze her.
"Grace arent you even a little scared?"
"Nah!" She answered with a peppy voice and a grin that streched from ear to ear. "Why should I be? After all I got my big strong Dragonite here beside me."
It was apparent she was poking fun at my expense. "Shut up. You cant be calling me that here. I want to at least not look like a loser on the first day. Besides I doubt anyone of the other kids watch pokemon."
"Even if they did, they wouldnt admit it now would they Lee?"
"Probably not. Cant blame them either."
She huffed unsatisfied with my responses. "Hmph. Well you do whatever you want, but Im staying true to myself and what I enjoy."
"Grace Im not saying to change who we are, just not say anything to make us look lame ya know?"
"Well whatever you say. Looks like we are in different homerooms, but our lunch schedules are the same so I will see you then."
She darted off among the busy hallway of students. I knew I had really upset her but I wanted to fit in. It was not worth trying to pertend to be somebody I wasnt though.
The hours seemed to drag by that day. English, math, and science. All of it was the same that day. An overview of the course and a traditional introduction of yourself. I was scatterbrained as I kept worrying if Grace was mad at me.
Finally lunch time came and as planned we ran into each other. She greeted me with the same cheesy grin and hug I was so accustomed to. It was evident she had forgotten our earlier skirmish.
"I've missed you Lee!" She grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the lunch line.
"Its only been a few hours relax." I tried playing cool to her. In part because I was recongizing how important she was to me. I guess I was starting to develop feeling for her and wanted to be awesome in her eyes.
"Yeah but still its been a long day. I like all my teachers, but some of my classmates are really annoying. They asked some dumb questions today."
I gently punched her arm before responding. "Oh yeah like what?"
"When is recess or my favorite was can we have a snack time. Like for real we arent in kindegarden anymore."
"Haha yeah you're right."
"Well anyway what about you? You made any new friends?"
I blushed a little but told the truth. "Well sorta. I've been quiet most of the day but there was a girl I kinda liked."
"Ohhhhhhhh?!" She mocked back at me with a red face. I began wondering if she wasnt beginning to feel a little jelous. "Tell me all about her."
I shrugged it off and we got our lunch and found a table. We contemplated if this was going to be like elementary school where everyone sat at the same table all the time.
"Come on Lee tell me!" Her persistance was rather annoying but I didnt want to take anymore chances.
"Well her name is Michelle. She is in my math class. I knew her last year but over the summer she got really hott."
