-branch's pov-

i woke up around 6:30 in the morning to the aladdin credits playing and a soft snore.

poppy had on one of my sweatshirts. she must've woken up and gotten it in the middle of the night.

the couch was small, and she had her head laying on my chest.

i smiled. quietly, i got up, making sure to not wake her up. my hair was a mess and i wasn't sure where my leaf vest had gone off to, but i was too tired to even realize that it was gone.

i walked into the kitchen and made breakfast for the two of us. i knew exactly what she liked; two scrambled eggs and a glass of strawberry milk.

once i was done with her breakfast, i heard her snoring stop and she slowly walked into the kitchen. her hair was a mess, but nothing compared to mine. my sweatshirt was a dress on her, but she didn't seem to mind.

"morning," i said.

"did you make eggs?" she asked, stretching.

i nodded. "and strawberry milk."

she perked up and ran over to give me a big hug. "how did you know what i eat for breakfast every morning?"

i lead her to my table where her food has been nicely placed out. "we spent a week together to save all of the trolls. did you forget?"

she laughed. "oh, right. almost forgot about that!"

i made myself a bowl of lucky charms and sat across from her. by the time i'd sat down, she was almost halfway done.

"what time did you fall asleep?" she asked me, stuffing her face with eggs.

"honestly, i can't remember. after you did."

poppy touched her head. "i think i have a party hangover."

i laughed and we sat in silence for another minute, listening to the music of the aladdin credits from the living room.

this does feel weird. i've never had someone in my kitchen with me, let alone sleep over at my bunker before.

poppy looked at me. "what are you thinking about?"

"i'm thinking about why i spent so much time down here. i was lonely, but too afraid to admit i was. i wasted 20 years of my life down here."

"well, it's never too late for a fresh start," poppy got up and put her empty dishes in my sink before dragging me away from the table and back to the couch to watch more movies. "i mean, you've got movies to last you a lifetime."

i smiled and turned on pitch perfect. surprisingly, poppy doesn't fall asleep again. while she was watching the movie, i stared into space and wondered what it would've been like if i had become happier sooner.
