That night, Danny's eyes popped open, his body drenched in sweat once again. He ran a hand over his face, upset that he had another nightmare. He looked to Linda, who was seemingly sleeping soundly. Curtesy of the dim light coming through the en-suite door, he could see her silhouette. He watched her shift to her other side, stay there for a while, then roll on her back. Thinking she was in the middle of a bad dream, he tried to wake her up. "Linda, baby. You okay?"
He heard a small voice. "Hey! Watch it!"
"Uh..." he saw a mini version of himself, dressed in a nice sweater vest and jacket combination. "Exactly.... who are you?"
"Oh come on! Don't tell me you don't recognize me?" He snapped his fingers and a blue chair appeared on the vacant spot on the pillow. He sat down, "I'm the interpreter for your subconscious. See those people over there?"
Danny saw a small group of people standing on Linda's chest.
"Those are your cliché inner angel and demon. Linda's are there, too."
Danny saw a smaller version of himself dressed in a white tee and blue jeans. He wore a scarf around his neck and a hat on his head; his angel wings were proudly behind him. The demon Danny wore the same color jeans and a red T-shirt, his devil horns prominent on his head. The Angel Linda wore a long, flowing yellow-green dress, with a see-through lace bodice. The bodice had different colored sequins, and a sparkly halo hovered above her head. The demon Linda wore his old rookie uniform shirt, and nothing else. Her red pointy tail stuck out, flicking about like a cat's tail.
"I thought it'd be white robes and devil suits, not sexy dresses and my old uniform shirt." Danny told his interpreter.
"This is your sordid subconscious, not mine."
Devil Linda sighed and put her hands on her hips, the shirt riding up some. "This guy's never gonna get better!" She watched Danny's angel and demon jump over to him.
"Give him a break!" Angel Linda walked up to her bad self. "He endured hell for four years!"
"Angel Linda's right!" Angel Danny agreed, "That's a lot to take in."
"Oh get off it!" Demon Danny rolled his eyes. "Y'think Angel Linda would go out with me?"
"Yeah," Interpreter Danny chuckled. "Devil Danny keeps trying to get Angel Linda to go out with him. I think she's close to cracking!"
"Angel Danny," Angel Linda called attention to her male counterpart. "You agree with me. It's a normal reaction, right?"
"Wrong, sweet cakes," Demon Danny appeared next to her. "It's been five months. Demon Linda over there even yelled at him."
"That's because he's being a dick!" Demon Linda exaggerated a shrug. "I'm the demon, and even I know he's being a dick."
"But all his friends died right before his eyes!" Angel Danny tried to reason.
"And Linda has cramps that murder! We've all got our problems," demon Linda crossed her arms.
"Apples and oranges, babe."
"I thought I was your babe!" Angel Linda frowned.
"You are, but so is she. It's— look, it doesn't matter, okay? We're just here to help with the big picture."
"The big picture is that he's right," Demon Linda jumped over to Angel Danny. "He's been a douche, and she should leave his sorry, broken ass right now!"
"Don't be ridiculous!" Angel Linda strode over to demon Danny. "They bound by the bonds of love, and no man can put that asunder." She put her hand on demon Danny's chest. "Ooh, I like this."
"He's got a major point, hun," demon Linda pushed her bangs back. "Danny, that is. She doesn't deserve him, end of story."
"We all make mistakes, Demon Linda," Angel Danny raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, like Goody-Two-Shoes feeling up my male counterpart." She jabbed her thumb over her shoulder.
Angel Danny gasped, "Linda!"
"What?" She was in demon Danny's arms, her hands roaming his now bare torso. "This is gonna be my mistake. My hot... sexy... rough mistake."
"But we're trying to get a point across!" He watched the angel and demon kiss fervently.
"Listen, Danny," demon Linda stood a few inches from his face. "The point is you messed up, but the broad's crazy enough to stay with you. Get therapy, get pills, introduce her to BDSM to get your frustrations out. She'll like that, trust me. Just do what you have to do, and she'll forgive you. She's already forgiven you. And you do realize we're not really devil and angel represents, right? We're your good side and your bad side. I'm the whore in your wife. You haven't really opened me yet, but you're gonna love it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta take a swim." She took off the uniform shirt, revealing her birthday suit. She saw Danny raise his eyebrows, and she smirked. "What? You don't like my bikini?" She did a perfect dive into invisible water, then disappeared.
"Listen, man," Angel Danny turned to him, "Linda loves you with all her heart, and you love her that way, too. Right now, her heart's aching for you. Because you're hurt, and she can't help you deal. She's scared for you. So man up. You pray; ask for help. It's not hard. The Boss is always happy to help...." he snapped his fingers and disappeared.
"Where'd they go?" Danny looked at the interpreter.
"Oh, back into your subconscious. Apologize to your wife-" he heard a gasp, "ignore demon Danny and Angel Linda right now. Just show your wife you love her. But her something, and promise you'll get help. I think, no. I know she's already proved she loves you more than life itself. Prove to her you love her just them same."
"Will I.... this has been pretty weird. Are you-"
"Coming again? Maybe. If you need us. I'll put them on leashes next time. So long." He clapped his hands, and the three of them disappeared.
Danny's eyes opened for real, and he looked around, almost expecting his and Linda's subconscious personas. He looked at his wife, who was sleeping on her back. "I'm gonna prove I love you, you'll see." He kissed her nose, and laid on his side, putting a protective arm over her.
Linda moaned slightly, and rolled over, instinctively cuddling up with her husband.
