Cannon: I can't ever remember Danny/Linda calling each other sweetheart. They have other "pet" names: babe, baby, honey, sweetie. But no sweetheart. Which is why.....

Non-Canonical: I have decided that "sweetheart" is a term they use to make sure the other one means business. And I mean when one of them has clamped up and won't talk. For example......

Linda crossed her arms, angry and upset at the same time. She wanted to scream at her husband, but she also wanted break down, and sob in his arms.
"Linda, I can't know what's wrong if you don't tell me. I'm not clairvoyant."
"Obviously." She scoffed, rolling her eyes; with her legs and arms still crossed, her face was set in an angry pout.
"Instead of being mad," Danny sat next to her on the sofa, "get whatever's bothering you off your chest."
"You wouldn't care anyways!"
"Linda. Sweetheart. You know that's not true!"
Linda grunted. She knew she had to tell him. After all. He used sweetheart.

It's kinda like a safe word between them. Or rather, a stop-giving-me-shit-and-Tell-me-the-truth word.
