I went to the cafe I always visited whenever I was low or unhappy and ordered my usual cup of coffee.
"Let me guess. You and Aunty fought again, right?"
"Stop it Hobi, I'm not in the mood." My friend Hoseok, who went by his nickname was the owner of the cafe. He sat at my table.
"So, I'm right!"
"UGH, YES! Now stop please."
"Why don't you just listen to her for once? Her idea is not that bad. It can actually be of some help, you know."
"Did Mom call you or something before I came?"
"No, why?"
"Because even you supporting her is just very exhausting for me. Can't you all just accept me the way I am? Why do I need a man to "complete" me in the first place?" I asked him feeling irritated and angry now.
He took a deep breath and sat on a chair opposite mine.
"You don't need a man to "complete" you Seo-Yeon. Heck yeah, you're great the way you are—"
"THEN WHY DOES SHE KEEP—"
"I AM NOT DONE YET!"
"Okay, continue."
"God, you're actually very irritating." He said and massaged his temples. "Okay look. You're great the way you are but you should try something new in life, which is dating or seeing someone. The problem with you is that you haven't even laid your eyes on one guy in your entire life and have already assumed what is going to happen if you date someone. That is not how things work!" He said and threw up his hands in the air.
"Hobi, I don't need to do a practical experimemt to know that. My Mum and my Grandma, both got cheated by their husbands. Do you think that isn't enough of a good reason for me to stay single?"
"No, it isn't. Your Grandma got married at a very young age when she didn't even know how things like relationship and marriage worked and your Mum fell for the wrong man. Even your Grandma didn't approve of him in the first place but your Mom still married him!"
"See, exactly! Both the men said they loved the ladies but they didn't. That's the point. Love is false."
"You're taking the wrong lesson, Seo-Yeon."
"Huh?"
"The lesson from these two stories isn't that love is false. It's that first of all, you shouldn't get married very early in life and secondly, you should know if the person is good or not."
"I—" I tried to interrupt but he spoke over me.
"I'm not wrong here. Even I have a boyfriend and let me tell you, it's the best feeling in the world to go home to someone after a long day at work who loves and cares for you — that special person who brightens the darkest of moments and whose presence is enough to make you feel contented with life. Moments with them are spent with happiness and moments without, are spent thinking about the lovely memories you two create. Love is not false dude, think about it. Give it a chance."
I was left silent for a minute or two, trying to absorb the meaning behind his words. They made some sense which I hated but I had to admit, he had a point. Hoseok had been in a lovely relationship with his boyfriend Yoongi and both of them were examples of a great couple. Their love did work. They made it work. With great unwillingness, I gave him some credit.
"You're becoming better at those inspirational monologues, Mister.” I commented, raising an eyebrow.
Hobi immediately grinned his bright heart smile. "Aaah! It's because of Yoongi, he writes too deeply when composing a song. I think I'm becoming like him."
I laughed at his sweetness.
"I'm really happy for you, you know that, right?" I asked him, trying to convey how much his happiness meant to me. He was my closest friend in the whole world.
"Yes, thank you. And please give me the chance of being happy for YOU too. Okay?" Hobi asked warmly, a tinge of concern peeking through his tone.
He took my hand and encapsulated it between his own two. I looked in his eyes and saw glitters of hope in them.
"Seo-Yeon, listen to your Mom for once, okay?" He looked into my eyes.
"O-okay...," was all I could let out at that moment, thinking of what to do.
"Coffee for Miss Seo-Yeon!" The waitress announced.
